Introduction:
This report outlines the methodology and statistical findings for a quantitative study on employees’
experiences of work at Lomond Insurance during the Covid-19 crisis. Lomond Insurance is a large
shipping company, based at Canary Wharf, which insures marine vessels and their cargo. Since
March 2020 employees based at Canary Wharf have worked from home, in response to the Covid-
19 crisis and government guidance.
Since then, the executives at Lomond Insurance have proposed continuing “working-from-home”
practices, and have commissioned research to investigate employees’ views of these proposals. A
survey was designed and distributed to a sample of employees. The results of this survey were
combined with HR data. This report presents the methodology of this research, presents a statistical
analysis of findings, and offers some recommendations for the executives.
The Quantitative Approach:
1) Positivism:
In this approach, the role of researcher will be confined to data collection and interpretation.
(research-methodology.net)
Characteristics:
Prediction is based on the quantitative observations
Random selection of sample from large population
Generalized through probability in statistics
Researcher should focus on facts
Observer should be independent
Use scientific methods for studies
Strengths:
Can study the relationship between the events
Can be more reliable
Provides quantitative data which is more objective
, Weaknesses:
Lack of valid explanation to trends
Individuals’ actions are neglected because it may not represent views of
large population
Fixed approach to research
2) Quantitative Research:
Characteristics:
Conducted for large sample sizes
Study is objective
Has hypothesis
Interpretation of data using software
Data is represented in the form of figures and tables
Based on Positivism
Strengths:
Time-effective
Reliable results
Simple method to follow
Generalization of results
Weaknesses:
Risk is involved in result generalization
In depth understanding is not provided
Requires statistical knowledge
Research Design:
1) Sample:
Probability sampling is the method which gives equal opportunity to every individual in
the population to be randomly selected. A sample is drawn from large population.
(Arkadiusz, 2020).
Benefits:
Estimation is unbiased
Sampling error can be measured
Cost effective
Less degree of judgement is involved
Limitations:
