Ethics is when you deal with right or wrong behavior and it is also about ensuring things are morally
right. An example of an ethical issue is if a nurse was not on shift but about to leave the hospital and she
witnessed a patient fall over but because she is not on shift she legally doesn’t have to help them. This is
subject to an ethical issue because the nurse was no longer on shift so she doesn’t have to go and help
that person but morally she shouldn’t ignore the patient and not help him get back up.

Ethical theories
Consequentialism theory is the correct way of dealing with a situation depending on the consequence/
outcome of the act. The way of dealing with a situation should depend on the consequence of the act.
In Alice's case she was denied counselling consequentialism theory would stay that because of this the
consequence is that her depression could get worse and could lead to Alice committing suicide, to avoid
this the service provider should think of the consequence of denying counselling think what will happen
if this act is committed.

Deontology suggests you should make a decision based on your duties/ job and make a decision because
its ethically correct. Deontology consists with moral absolution the idea that some actions are wrong no
matter what consequences occur. whether a situation is good or bad it means the person should act on
the consequences that may happen. For example if Nusrat wasn’t taking her epilepsy medication and
someone at the are center knew this they should report this because if they don’t' it could lead to Nusrat
having a fit.

Principles – is four key ethical principles, autonomy – respecting decisions/ allowing independence,
beneficence – balancing risks and costs, non-maleficence - doing good not harm, justice – looks at the
law and the rights of the people involved. In Alice's case her decisions should be respect for example if
Alice didn’t want to go to counselling but her gp advised it they should respect her decision.

Virtue ethics – decisions are based on individual’s morals and what you feel the right decision is. in
Martins case when doctors are giving him advice on what is best for his skin condition they should talk to
him based on how martin is, Martin is self-conscious so the doctor should talk to him in a manner
specific to him to make him feel comfortable In the situation.

Ethical principles
Conflict of interest – is when care workers are faced with a conflict of interest, they will need to find an
ethical solution. Ethical solutions need to consider risk to the individual, legal responsibilities and have
they got all the facts of the case. For example, a doctor being asked to prescribe the contraceptive pill to
an underage girl without her parents' consent. For Nusrat’s case her mom may want Nusrat to not do a
certain class at the community center as she feels it would be to difficult for her, however a community
worker thinks that it would benefit her in doing this – this would be a conflict of interest.
