have also promoted skills and attributes such as problem-solving and loyalty
throughout her progress, this is due to the fact that she needed support due to her
alcoholism problem. The manager knew that he had to be careful with his words as
they may come across rude, hostile or discriminatory. In addition to this, they have
decided to become an advocate for Alice, this has shown commitment towards her
case and has proven that he can be trustworthy. Resulting in Alice trusting her
advocate and feeling encouraged to better herself.

Onto Martins’ case, he has been promoted equality and diversity throughout offering
him different options. However there could have been different ways that the health
and social care workers could have handled his skin condition with his passion for
carpentry class through offering him the opportunities of wearing gloves, having
ventilation throughout the class and possibly wearing a mask. The debt adviser and
carpentry instructor have promoted skills and attributes such as patience, negotiation
and problem solving throughout his progress. This is due to the help he has received
from the carpentry instructor, he has taken his time to help one of the students in his
class with his outside life. The instructor has provided Martin with a debt adviser, in
order to help him build his life back up, as well as being offered an opportunity to
attend the centre for him to learn ways of achieving a job. Problem-solving was one
of the biggest attributes supported throughout Martins’ progression, this is because
of how people had to help him to be more open minded into finding different
solutions to his different problems.

Referring to the three cases, the impact of preventing discrimination for individuals
with different needs is important as this can affect their mental, physical and
emotional health.

Discrimination is when there is prejudice against a person or a group of people. The
reasons for this might be age, religion, gender, race, ethnicity, social class, family
structure, sexuality, ability, health (conditions), disability, address, dress or
appearances. This may result in discrimination and treat them differently. However,
there are four types of discrimination.

Throughout Nusrat's case, she has a learning disability and epilepsy causing
learning disability through her development. She has also lost her father, causing her
mother to be the only primary carer for her, unfortunately her mother finds taking
care of Nusrat stressful causing Nusrat to not have as much support as expected.
Nusrat could receive direct discrimination as she can be treated differently from
others and receive hostile behaviour, causing her to have a bad mental health. This
is because of the behaviour and words she might receive, this may cause her to
believe what other people say and develop a bad self-image. Nusrat could also

receive indirect discrimination as she has special needs and people may not
understand that certain actions can cause her to believe that she is an outcast and
that she doesn't deserve the same treatment as other people. However she may also
receive unfair discrimination, this means that other people may be treated better
compared to her, ergo causing her to believe that she is not enough and potentially
decreasing her own self-confidence in many activities. On the other hand positive
discrimination can be identified throughout the case as they support her for who she
is and encourage diversity and equality around her. Therefore, being able to create a
healthy environment around her.

If Nusrat received discrimination this may cause her mental illnesses to be triggered
more by stress, developing a problem and causing her to believe things others say
or do. This can lead her to loss of confidence, depression and anxiety and
withdrawal from social activities. This is due to the fact that she works with other
people that can easily discriminate against her due to her disabilities.
For that reason it is important to prevent discrimination in workplaces and centres as
this will cause awareness of people to not discriminate and to think before they say
something. This will also encourage people to learn about different cultures and
learn about how important diversity is in communities. The workplace could also
prevent discrimination by providing access to everyone, such as providing disabled
toilets, automatic doors, wide corridors and signs, this would benefit Nusrat as she
needs a carer with her at all times, and providing her access to these things, she is
able to still hold dignity whenever she will be accompanied by her carer in the
bathroom for any emergency action.

In conclusion the impact of preventing discrimination with different needs is important
on the individual's mental and physical health as well as emotional as this can cause
the pupils self image to decrease in confidence and may affect the way she acts
around other people. Therefore, this can cause the individual to withdraw from social
activities.

During Alice’s case, there has been discrimination identified throughout her
development. She has received direct discrimination as people from her aerobics
class have distanced themselves and have complained about her smell of alcohol
during exercises. Alice has found a coping mechanism in drinking, therefore it is hard
to give that up as she has also recently lost her husband due to cancer. She has
developed to be distressed due to the members of the class as well as the instructor,
ergo affecting her mental health and causing her to feel like an outcast to everyone
else. The instructor of the aerobic class has given her direct discrimination as she
was told to attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting rather than the aerobic class.
However Alice has identified the discrimination and denied that those changes
should take place. The individual could also receive unfair discrimination as people
may treat her differently due to her problems and may leave her to be by herself
rather than including her in different activities. Besides this, she could also receive
