My Forest School Journey probably began as a participant when a young child, however I’m
sure it wasn’t called Forest School at his time 😊
I’ve always enjoyed being outdoors and will cycle or walk everywhere as a preference as it
helps to restore balance at the end of a stressful week!
I’ve always tried to use an outdoor space whenever possible when working with children (or
the sea, beach, rivers…etc) and actively encouraged my daughters to participate in as many
outdoor activities as possible with one living and working in South Africa for 5 years as a
Field Guide setting up a Tactical Fire Arms and Anti-Poaching Unit before retraining as a
Cyber Security specialist and about to climb Kilimanjaro. My other daughter has also gained
international experience working with children both in and outdoors and is a Play Specialist
within a hospital now seeking to establish some form of alternative education for her
forthcoming child (my first grandchild!! 😊)
I was motivated to attempt this course as I believe many opportunities are lacking in the
current Education System in the UK to support our children due to lack of funding,
curriculum restraints, SEN provision and also the horrendous impact of the Covid 19 legacy.
I have found this course very lengthy and time consuming for a Level 3 qualification
especially on top of working 50+ hours per week. I don’t believe my work has always been
good, however I’m very self-deprecating!!
To inform my future sessions in Forest School (FS) I would like to enable more “flow” and
less rigid “teaching” within my sessions (coming from a teaching background sometimes its
difficult not be in “control” of everything!!!) Id like to have more fluidity and adaptation
when the need is identified to do so. I realise that as my FS practice grows so will my
experience, and ability to respond to more situations providing greater experiences for both
the participants and myself.
I need to try to be less prescriptive when planning FS sessions which means adapting my
leadership style and disseminating more responsibilities and information to the staff
supporting the sessions.
Moments of stillness or being-one-with-nature need to be included and greatly included
within future sessions as many children seem to be demonstrative of immediate gratification
and entertainment, therefore in future sessions I would encourage a gradual introduction to
