BTEC Level 3 Public Services
Unit 18 Assignment No.1

Approaches to Psychology
and Psychological Studies
Behaviour in the Public
Services
Introduction

In this assignment, I will be identifying, describing and analysing approaches
to psychology and psychological studies. By the end of this assignment, I
hope to understand the role that behaviour plays in the public services.

(P1) Identify approaches to psychology and their
theorists

Psychology is the scientific study of how we think, feel and behave. It is
generally agreed that there are five main theories of psychology:
 Behavioural
 Psychodynamic
 Cognitive
 Humanistic
 Social
It is largely agreed by psychologists that no one perspective is entirely correct or
the only explanation.

Behavioural
Also known as behavioural neuroscience, the biological perspective examines
how our physiology (body) ultimately shapes our psychology (mind).
It is concerned with the structure and function of the brain, nervous system and
hormones and the role they play in determining our thoughts, feelings and
subsequent behaviours.
