The decline:
The docks became abandoned and virtually derelict.
By 1981, large ships could no longer reach the part of
London and containerisation did away with
, the need for large number of dockers.
By this time the area has quite few jobs, the
docks had closed, over half the land was
derelict, many of the 19th century terraced housing
needs urgent repair. transport was poorly
developed and there was a lack of basic services
(leisure, amenities and open space).
The regeneration project was put in place to try
and improve the social economic and environmental
conditions of the area.

Environmental regeneration:
→ 728 hectares of derelict land
reclaimed
→ 160, 000 trees planted
→ 130 hectares of open space
created
→ 17 conservation areas created
