Equality
In a Health and Social Care setting it is essential for the practitioners to know that
they should encourage equality, diversity and rights in any situation that they are put
in with a service user. They should also ensure that prejudice and discrimination does
not happen and begin to empower each service user who seeks professional help or
advice.
Equality means that the people in a situation result in being equal. This could mean
that one may need more than the other for them to be at the same stage in the end.
This could be in terms of extra time or extra help to ensure that they are at the same
level as others around them. It is important for people to be treated with equality to
ensure that everyone involved feels valued, this is likely to improve their confidence.
Whereas, if equality wasn’t used they would feel discriminated against and
embarrassed which would make them less likely to go to the service again as they
would have felt uncomfortable.
An example of this in a health and social care setting would be that when a pupil sits
the same exam as everyone else but struggles to read the questions due to their
condition, which could be dyslexia, this is when a person a person has a reading
disability because their brain has a difficulty with processing symbols, this would of
course effect their quality of learning as it means they need more time to understand
things in comparison to others. They must be allowed to have extra time as they will
then have more of a chance of achieving the result they had aimed for, as they have
been able to answer more questions than what they would have without the extra
time. This means that the individuals all have equal rights therefore the service
provider promotes equality. “The Equality Act 2010 legally protects people from
discrimination in the workplace and in wider society. It replaced previous anti-
discrimination laws with a single Act, making the law easier to understand and
strengthening protection in some situations.”1 Another example would be that many
people cannot eat the food that a Health and Social Care setting provides, this would
