D1 – analyse the benefits of understanding diversity in relation to health and social care

Diversity is the “valuing of our individual differences and talents, creating a culture where
everyone can participate, thrive and contribute.” 1 Therefore it is accepting people for who
they are even if your views are different to theirs. In a health and social care setting diversity
should be promoted to show that the health service isn’t prejudiced or discriminating
against anyone and this would make everyone feel welcome.

Diversity is shown through empowerment, this is the “authority or power given to someone
to do something”.2 In a health and social care setting all individuals should be given the same
choices, this would mean they would become more independent within themselves as they
have more control over what goes on in their lives. Examples of the choices they should be
given would be what food they eat, what activities they participate in and what clothes they
wear during the day. So, for an individual, if the service empowers them it would build
confidence and improve their personal understanding of personal skills this would therefore
help them communicate better with others due to feeling emotional maturity. This would
mean diversity is important to the health and social care setting as they ensure everyone is
treated equally. The benefit of showing diversity through empowerment would be that
service users would feel more comfortable and are more likely to use the service as they
would have had a good experience.

Regardless of who a person is, the health and social care setting should acknowledge that
they have rights so they should be respected in every way possible. Every person is covered
by the Human Rights Act 2010 so each individual should be treated “equally, with fairness,
dignity and respect.”3 The Human rights act is available to every person in the United
Kingdom whether they were born in the UK or are foreign, whether they are a prisoner or a
member of the public, or if they are an adult or child. It has to be used by organisations
including health and social care settings, therefore each individual need should be met and
their wants and preferences should be taken into account. An example could be that an
individual who has committed a crime and is now a prisoner gets admitted to hospital, the
health and social practitioners would have to treat the individual just the same as everyone
else as their rights and needs have to be respected, this would mean that diversity is being
