Introduction:

In this report, the aim is to review the different departments in Factory,
along with the research and development site of various organizations on
how it conducts health and safety management. An inspection alongside
health and safety inspectors within the Southwark council. This is to
inspect the company to see how well they follow the health and safety
legislation, what are the potential hazards and how is it prevented. Also,
with the health and safety measures that align with the legislation. In both
environments within a laboratory or industrial production site or an
educational setting. And it differs from one another. The task is to explain
the health and safety management system used in the National Physical
Laboratory vs Walworth Academy Science Department.



National Physical Laboratory:

NPL is a governmental laboratory that focuses on the advancement and
preservation of national measurement standards. It also cooperates with
other national metrology institutes to sustain the international system of
measurement. It impacts the measurement capability that affects the UK’s
quality of life. It helps with the distribution of products that are developed
and tested for different organisations in technology. Including
measurement science that helps with data to allow international trade
which is an economic impact on the UK. It works with the association of
two universities, the department of science, innovation, and technology,
and is also a part of the national measurement system. NPL sustains a
high level of health and safety performance as it consists of a good level
of organisation and reduces risks or hazards and control measures to

Legislations:

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 is relevant to the
organisation as it has a lot of substances, that are used for development
and research purposes.

Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996. This links
to all the equipment and chemicals that are used which has the safety
signs to ensure that are used properly and to prevent any risks from
happening to someone.

Manual handling operations regulations are relevant for employees old or
new to know how to operate certain equipment and technology.

Personal Protective Equipment at Work regulations protect workers from
harmful substances and to restrict exposure from hazards like ionising
radiation.

Health and Safety Display Screen Equipment Regulations used when using
different equipment that uses digital screening to check for measurements
or how much dosage to use.



Measures complying with Legislation.

A safety procedure used in the lab, using sharp bins to throw away
needles safely.

A safety procedure used is a magnetic field kibble balance that has
warning signs displayed, so someone that has a pacemaker can’t meet it
because it’s magnetic.

The members of staff go through training to be able to use it properly. This
helps to control the equipment used and to reduce risks.

NPL uses safety boots, visors, face masks and shields all designed in a
way to keep away from corrosive chemical substances away.
