Unit 8: Psychological Perspectives for Health and Social Care

P3 explain different psychological
approaches to social care practice
In this section of my assignment I will be explaining different
psychological approaches to social care practice. I will start of by talking
about how the behaviourists apply their approach in social care practice
then I will explain how the cognitive approach is used in social care.
Many psychological approaches have been used in social care practices.
The behaviourists have used their approach to treat addictions and
phobias using the desensitisation treatment. This approach is useful
because it clearly explains about behaviour that has been learnt. This can
be done via classical conditioning which looks at behaviours using the
association concept, learning can also be done by operant conditioning
which is the concept of reward and punishment. In social car systematic
desensitisation is used as a form of aversion therapy, for instance if
someone had a phobia of being in crowed places may feel anxious and
depressed as they may become fearful of leaving the comfort of their
home. In cases like this the best course of action for the therapist is to
apply the principles of classical conditioning. This can be done by creating
a hierocracy of fears. The health professional may come up with a list of
aspects that the service user associates with fear. This classical
conditioning procedure helps the service user to achieve a state of
relaxation. This is very useful means for reducing anxiety levels. This
procedure is repeated over a period of time until the service user could
face the final most feared obeect and situation, which is to actually go out
to somewhere crowd without any worry and anxiety.
The humanist approach focuses on making the world a better place for
everyone. They approach ever situation with an opened mind and in a
non-eudgmental manner. For example if an individual suffers with
alcoholism and wanted help as their problem was affect their social life
which has resulted in them becoming suicidal and mentally frustrated. A
therapist would have to apply the humanist approach. The humanist
would attempt to look at it freshly, honestly, obeectively. The therapist
would focus on changing the client’s own choices and behaviours that led
to the addictive behaviours, as a result changing the addictive behaviours.
Motivational enhancement therapy is a popular and effective form of
humanistic-oriented approach, which is used commonly in alcohol and
drug rehabilitation.
The cognitive approach is based on the theory that in the development of
maladaptive behavioural patterns like addictions. The way the therapist
helps to overcome the addiction is to identify and correct problematic
behaviours by applying a range of different skills that can be used to stop
