Inflammation and Repair 1
Inflammation:
Response to cellular injury
Cells and molecules of the host defence are brought via the circulation to where they are
needed

Acute inflammation:
Initial and short-lived response to injury
Develops over a short period of time

Characterized by:
Vasodilation= increased blood flow
Exudation-increased permeability of blood vessels to proteins,fluid,cells
Emigration of leukocytes from the circulation to the damaged tissue

Heat: increased blood flow
Rubor-increased blood flow
Tumour-increased blood flow and vascular permeability
Pain-Release of prostaglandins, neuropeptides and cytokines
Loss of function- damage to cells and connective tissue necessary for tissue function

Vasodilation-earliest sign
Histamine=capillary beds open
Increased vascular permeability=increased viscosity of blood, stasis and oedema
Contraction of endothelial cells-increases spaces
Endothelial injury-direct damage

Leukocyte are recruited to the site of inury:
 Margination and rolling
 Activation by chemokines=adhesion
 Migration through the vessel wall

Leukocytes move via chemotaxis led by chemoattractants

Activated leukocoytes:
 Phagocytosis
 ROS
 NETs
 MMPs
Damage can occur to host tissue as a result of the inflammatory response

Systemic response: TNF-A,IL-6- induce acute phase proteins and bone marrow
stimulation=leukocytes
 Fever
 Tachycardia
 Hypotension
