Lifestyle, Health and Improvement
Lifestyle is the way we conduct our lives; for example, what we eat and when, the jobs we do, and the
relatonships we have.ꓖ There are seven main lifestyle factors that have an efect on our health and ftness.ꓖ
Below they are described, alongside an explanaton of how each of these factors afect our health, and an
evaluaton of how these factors may afect an individual applying for the public services.ꓖ
Physical actvity
Any exerton that enhances and maintains health and ftness is
physical actvity.ꓖ A brisk walk, running, dancing and swimming
are all good examples.ꓖ Structured and planned physical actvity
is exercise, which includes sport.ꓖ It can be an individual efort, or
done with teams of people.ꓖ The government recommend doing
150 minutes of moderate exercise every week, or 75 minutes of
intense exercise a week.ꓖ This splits down to about 15 to 30
minutes per day.ꓖ Not partaking in physical actvity can result in
issues such as high blood pressure, obesity, osteoporosis, weak muscles and high cholesterol levels.ꓖ
Physical exercise has a great efect on health and ftness.ꓖ Individuals who perform physical actvity regularly
strengthen their heart, and therefore are less likely to sufer a heart atack.ꓖ The heart can also cope beter with
sudden strenuous exercise as it gets stronger.ꓖ Physical actvity also:
Reduces bliid pressure. As the heart works more efciently, the body’s overall blood pressure is lowered.ꓖ
This is due to the fact that the force on the arteries is lesser as the heart works less to pump the same volume
of blood around the body.ꓖ Exercise keeps the blood vessels fexible too; this is due to the fact the body must
adjust the size of them in response to increased blood fow during exercise.ꓖ
Helps maiotaio a healthy weight. Weight can be put on if a person consumes more calories than they burn.ꓖ
Calories and fat that have been consumed and put on are burned through physical actvity – calories are
burned as a primary energy source, and then the body turns to its fat reserves for energy.ꓖ Rather than just
disappearing, the fat changes its form.ꓖ Fat is made up of something called triglyceride, which can be broken
down into glycerol and faty acid chains.ꓖ These components can be used by the body, especially the muscles,
as energy.ꓖ The more energy the muscles require, the more fat must be broken down to provide it, resultng in
weight loss.ꓖ
Sliws diwo bioe deteriiratio. The skeleton cannot be trained to improve directly – however, bones can be
strengthened through weight bearing exercises and walking.ꓖ Exercise also increases osteoblast actvity in the
