Outdoor and Adventurous Expeditons
Plan a one day and mult day expediton

One day expediton

Choice of actvity, locaton, client group, groups, staf, ties and routes: For the one-day expediton, I have
chosen to plan a 15 mile walk across Dartmoor. The client group is 20 partcipants from the Public Service
course at Discovery college. They all know each other well, can work efectvely in teams, and are of good
physical ftness levels. The partcipants will be divided into 4 teams of 5, with 2 staf allocated to each team.
One member of staf will walk with the team, and the other member of staf will remain at the allocated base
point to manage the admin for that team. All members of staf must be frst aid trained, navigaton and moor
safety competent, and the teams must be briefed on these things to a certain level too. The day before the
expediton, staf and partcipants will have a briefng day, where funds are collected, equipment is checked,
and frst aid and hillwalking top up courses are delivered, to prepare for the expediton. The team must have
limited or no aid, with the member of staf walking with them only stepping in where there is an emergency,
possible danger, or the team have tried and exhausted all the strategies they have considered and stll need
help. Each team will each have a slightly diferent 15-mile route to walk over the day, startng and fnishing at
the same point. The teams will have 10 hours to complete the expediton, startng at 8am, and being required
to fnish by 6pm. If the teams have not reached the fnish point, their member of staf will contact base to
deploy a minibus to collect them from the nearest collecton point.

Aiis and objectves: The aims and objectves of this expediton are based around teamwork, navigaton and
hillwalking skills, as well as appreciaton for personal ftness, landscape and heritage. The teams take part in a
planned, challenging expediton with their peers, aiming to build knowledge in the areas of countryside code,
navigaton, moorland safety and teamwork. Through the day, they aim to enhance self confdence through the
development of leadership skills (as they take turns to lead tasks faced during the day, such as navigatng legs
of the walk) and proving to themselves they can be self-sufcient on a challenging expediton. The teams strive
to the objectve of fostering an ability to cope with adversity, (weather changes, loss of morale, tredness,
minor injury, tricky terrain) navigatng efectvely with only map and compass, and appreciatng the benefts of
personal ftness through outdoor actvity. The partcipants aim to grow in personal responsibility, team spirit,
and fnally respect and appreciaton for wildlife, cultural heritage, and the landscape around them as a result
of the one day expediton.

Periission: Permission will need to be gained from the head of Discovery College, Tom Lavis, and from the
partcipants and their next of kin. No private land will be crossed on any of the routes, and so no permission
from landowners will be required.
