Research Methods

This project is writing about the effect innovation had on high end restaurants. The Coronavirus
pandemic first started in China and then came to affect all the other countries in the world. It was a
devastating time for everyone with the country in a lockdown and people not able to go out and do
the things they want, this didn’t help anyone and resulted in a lot of job losses and many people
being put on the furlough scheme. There were many industries that got affected during the
pandemic however the hospitality industry took a very big blow as they weren’t allowed to open at
all meaning that hotels and restaurants that rely on people are definitely going to suffer.

During the Coronavirus pandemic there was a massive effect on hospitality as an industry, this
meant that the restaurants suffered because of it, so in order to stay open they had to use many
different forms of innovation. This started with outdoor seating as it was less likely for the virus to
spread, then many restaurants went on to do a takeaway option which allowed them to remain
open in the heart of the pandemic. After that many restaurants went on to keep the takeaway
option as there was a high demand for it and it was needed by the restaurants to get the profits back
an example of this is a point made by the Office of National Statistics and they have said that
Consumer spending started to increase in May 2021 but currently it remains low compared to the
pre pandemic levels at less than 70% in May this remained one quarter lower than 2019 levels.

Once the pandemic slowed down and people were allowed back inside restaurants there was a
considerable rise in the amount of people that were eating out due to the eat out to help out
scheme set up by the government. Once this had its use, and things went back to normal many
restaurants kept their takeaway option and it seemed to hit off for most. However, it was the high-
end restaurants that struggled the most due to the rising prices most people struggled to afford the
high-end restaurants they weren’t able to keep the takeaway food as much as it was hard for the
restaurant to plate up as if it was in the restaurant meaning the diners won’t have the same
experience.

This research shows its importance as it helps with the understanding of how these restaurants
adopted the innovation and how they are adapting now the covid pandemic is over. According to the
UK Parliament (2022) In 2019 the economic output of the hospitality sector was £59.3 billion, which
was around 3% of total UK economic output. Hospitality businesses represented 3-5% of businesses
in each country and region. This research is important because it will give restaurants an insight into
whether the innovation that has been done is going to enhance profitability for them.

Objectives:

The aims and objectives of this research break it down into small steps that enable the researcher to
indicate the general purpose of the research. The aims are usually written in broad terms, and they
are what you hope to achieve by the end of the project, whereas an objective is something specific
that is normally measurable and how this can achieve the aim.
