-25th august 2005 it reached hurricane status two when it passed over
south east Miami as a category 1 storm, blew through Miami and killed 2
people
-Katrina then weakened to a tropical storm as it began to weaken over the
land(due to lack of warm ocean water)
-the storm then crossed back into the gulf of Mexico and quickly regained
strength and hurricane status
-27th august it grew to a category 3 hurricane

Impacts
-1,836 people died (most significant number of deaths occurred in New
Orleans, Louisiana which flooded as the levee system failed). 1,200 deaths
came from chornic disease by the storm and 1/3 deaths from drowning
-154,522 houses destroyed between 2005-2006
-winds of up to 127mph
-up to 80% of the city of New Orleans was flooded
-damage of around $300 billion
-3 million people left without electricity for a week
-estimated 400,000 people were permanently displaced
-18 schools were destroyed and 74 others were badly damaged
-local people lost around 23,000 jobs as a consequence of hurricanes
putting factories and businesses out of business
-prices for oil and petrol went up
-looting took place in many areas and the US National Guard had to be
called to keep the peace
-some areas were flooded to depths of 3 metres

-of the 60,000 people stranded in New Orleans the Cost Guard rescued
more than 33,500
Early September, Congress authorized a $62.3 billion aid for victims
FEMA provided housing assistance e.g. rental assistance and trailers to
more than 700,000 people however only 1/5th of the trailers requested in
Orleans Parish were supplied which meant a large housing shortage in the
city
Approx. 58,000 national guard personnel were called to deal with the
aftermath of the storm and troops came from all 50 states – they helped
