Basketball Analysis
Introduction to basketball

I was observing the game between a yellow and white team. I was making annotations,
observations and interpretations of the white team’s performance. Their core strengths
were the following; screen-play, shooting and counter attacking, whereas their greatest
weaknesses were man to man marking, zonal marking and tackling.

Describe their strengths in basketball

During the observation I had noticed that the white team was often using this method called
‘screen-play’, which its purpose was to allow the team player with the ball to shoot or
rapidly pass by a defender to attempt to score. They were excellent at this technique; this
was because their communication and timing was very accurate, as they required the ability
to change their play, direction, change of speed and most importantly the transition of play
unnoticeably. The reason why this worked well was because the defender had to work
harder in order to divert around to catch the teammate as he was blocked by the screening
player. Their communication was effective as the screen player guided his teammate to pass
through the area where he wanted him to travel. This meant that anticipation of direction
was good as the screen player picked the right type of angle and position which the
defender would struggle to keep up with.

Their shooting was efficient, as they had good grip on the ball, their fingers were positioned
well when they were preparing to shoot. This clearly meant that their chances of scoring
were increased as they had the correct technique and method. The white team also
possessed their maintenance of stability and balance throughout, so this meant that they
were more comfortable as their movement provided from their legs and hips gave them a
slight guidance for aiming towards their target. This had resulted the white team from
scoring a few baskets and the reason behind this was that their hands were balanced as
their non-shooting hand remained on the side of the ball for assistance.

Their strategy was very cunning as they planned to use the counter attack style. This was
beneficial in terms of dominating the opponent’s vital area with complete possession of the
ball. Nevertheless, this had simply resulted in prompted pressure but also mercilessly,
leaving the defenders to chase back rapidly which had cost them to lose their stamina and
ultimately conceding goals for their team and moreover making it difficult for the yellow
team’s attackers as they have to work extraordinarily hard to stay level.

Explain their areas for improvement

There were a few areas they could have worked on as a team. For me the most
predominant skills were the following; zonal marking, man to man marking and tackling.
These are all linked to defensive principles which mean that the majority of the players from
the white team were not very effective in terms of reflecting upon defensive strategies. This
is the reason why they had conceded the same amount of the goals as they had scored. As
they were great at attacking and scoring goals, at the same time they would drop
significantly as those goals would be mean less due to their poor defence.

They can improve on man to man marking by going through several training drills. For
example, their coach can play a mini game such as 2 v 2. This can improve their ability to
stick with their man as well as learn and understand how to anticipate the opponent’s
