, Aim: to investigate the effect of caffeine on the heart rate of daphnia.

Hypothesis: The main aim of this study is to see how caffeine affects daphnia's heart rate. Caffeine is a
stimulant, and as the amount of caffeine increases, so does the heart rate; nevertheless, the heart will
stop pumping after a specific amount of caffeine has been consumed. It also depends on the size and
strength of the daphnia; larger and stronger daphnia require more, while smaller and weaker ones
require less.

Method

1. First, put a thin layer of cotton wool on the cavity slide to prevent the movement of daphnia and
secure them in place.
2. Choose a big daphnia from a water pond and drop it on the cavity slide using a pipette
3. Turn on the microscope and position the daphnia where you can see its heart properly
4. Add caffeine, using a different pipette.
5. It is better to leave the daphnia for a few seconds or minutes so that caffeine can show its effect,
do not leave it for too long as the daphnia might get tired and its heartbeat decreases
6. Record the heartbeat on a table as you may use different concentrations of caffeine
7. After recording the heartbeat, you could use the same daphnia or a different daphnia
