(P6) In this assignment I will be talking about Multidisciplinary teams and what professionals
will be needed in the case studies above. A multidisciplinary team is made up of a group of
healthcare professionals which all specialise in different professions, to help improve the
health of a patient.

Case study 2 is about a cancer patient called Claire. Claire is a 47-year-old mother which has 3
kids aged 12, 9 and 7 years old. She is currently a stage 3 cervical cancer patient which means
she has a very low chance of beating the cancer. She will need a multidisciplinary team to help
her and kids get through these difficult and tough stages.

The multidisciplinary team for Claire will consist of a surgeon which specialises in her type of
cancer which is cervical cancer. The surgeon will perform the appropriate surgery will suits the
needs and condition of the patient depending on the type of cervical cancer she has. For
example, Claire will have to have a radical hysterectomy as the cancer can spread from the
genetialia to the pelvic wall which can affect the kidneys. A surgeon will perform a radical
hysterectomy which will be a procedure where the uterus and cervix will be removed as well
the surrounding tissue and the upper part of the genetalia. This will be beneficial for Claire’s
health as she will endure less pain as well as having the risk of the cancer spreading reduced.

A radiologist which is a medical professional that specialises in x-rays and scans relating to
cancers and tissues which will help them see how far the cancer has spread. A radiologist will
be dealing with the x-rays and scans which will keep the other medical professionals updated
on the spreading of the cancer. For example, Claire will need to undergo some MRI scans which
will provide a scan and a visual image of whats going on in Claire’s body. This will be
beneficial for claire’s health as it will provide a visual image for the other healthcare
professionals of where most of the treatment should be targeted at.

A pathologist is a medical professional which studies the body tissues to see which parts need
treatment and what parts of tissues haven’t been affected. A pathologist will be dealing with
the body tissues by looking at them and testing the tissues to see if they are a non-cancerous
or cancerous tissue. If the tissue is cancerous, it will grow and spread to other parts of the
body compared to other tumours which just grow and do not spread. For example, Claire will
have some tissue taken from her cervix where the cancer is present, and it will be tested by
the pathologist so they can update the other healthcare professionals on whether the tumour
is spreading so they can take immediate action. This will be beneficial for Claire’s health as it
will keep her informed on how her tumour is doing and updated on what is going on in her
body as well as finding a treatment to slow down or prevent the growth.

An oncologist is a doctor which specialises in chemotherapy and radiography to help treat her
and provide her with medical care throughout the therapy sessions. An oncologist will be the
doctor treating the cancer patients through treatments and providing medical care. Oncology
has 3 areas, medical, surgical and radiation but in Claire’s case, a medical oncologist will be
needed. For example, Claire will need some chemotherapy to kill the cancer cells as well
other medication to help ease the process. This will be beneficial for Claire’s health as she will
be receiving the appropriate treatment by the right healthcare professional as well as reducing
the risk of the cancer spreading.

A palliative doctor is a doctor which specialises in relieving and easing the symptoms and pains
of cancer as well as help their quality of living. A palliative doctor will be the doctor helping
relieve the pain and symptoms of cancer and help improve the quality of life by reducing and
controlling side affects of cancer medications. For example, some medication Claire will have
to take many drugs and other medication through chemotherapy which have many side effects
including hair loss, fatigue, nausea and vomiting. This will be beneficial for Claire as it will
ensure she receives the right medication such as vitamins to help her regain some energy and
some painkillers to reduce the amount of pain she is going through.
