Explain how health and safety measures in a sciencfic organisation comply with
Legislation
Legislations are laws that have been passed down from the government to the public,
for everyone in the United Kingdom to follow. Legislation is important as they provide
protection and ensure that everyone knows what is deemed lawful and unlawful.
Legislations also ensure everyone is protected no matter what their background is, and
whether they are in education, workplace, or in public. Within a scientific background,
every organisation is expected to follow Legislations to ensure that health care
professionals safe, do not risk other getting injured, and ensure that any misconduct
gets reported quickly. Each scientific organisation will have their own set of Policies and
Procedures which comply with relevant Legislations. In this assessment I will be writing
about my research about GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).
Who is GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)?
GlaxoSmithKline also known as GSK are a pharmaceutical and a global biopharma
company, that research, establish, and produce medications, and vaccines for
healthcare users who have diverse diseases and illnesses. Their main goal is to provide
help for people who suffer from medical conditions to live a better and more sustainable
life. The medication and vaccines for the diseases range from minor diseases such as
eczema to major diseases such as cancer and HIV. They provide their consumers and
buyers with a range of medications such as oral, topical, and injections which ensure
that their users receive excellent quality health care and meet their preferences or
medical conditions. Finally, GSK sells their products to many diverse providers such as
Pharmacies, hospitals, and the NHS. “We are a science-led global healthcare company
with a special purpose: to help people do more, feel better, live longer. We have 3
global businesses that research, develop and manufacture innovative pharmaceutical
medicines, vaccines and consumer healthcare products” (www.gsk.com, 2020.)

What do GSK do and what their purpose is?:

GSK has one main purpose and a goal which is to ensure that many patients around
the world have had a good positive impact on their health towards the end of 2030.
They are also famous and known for currently developing medications for HIV and
diverse respiratory diseases. “We aim to positively impact the health of 2.5 billion
people by the end of 2030. Our bold ambitions for patients are reflected in new
commitments to growth and a step-change in performance”
(www.gsk.com, 2022.)

They also work on their vaccines which are the best in the biopharmaceutical industry
these vaccines have helped protect people from the following diseases; meningitis,
shingles, flu, polio, and measles. For example, within schools, pharmacies, and GP

, surgeries practitioners will provide jobs each year to service users. “Our vaccines
portfolio is the broadest in the industry, helping protect people from meningitis, shingles,
flu, polio, measles and many more. Today, one and a half million doses of our vaccines
are administered daily, and around 40% of the world's children receive a GSK jab each
year” (www.gsk.com, 2023.)

What is the organisational structure of GSK?:

An organisational structure are strategies that organisations will use to ensure that key
areas in relation to their goals are met. Overall, this will ensure that the workers in the
organisation effectively complete their job role and understand their responsibilities,
everything in the organisation runs smoothly, and it ensures that information is being
shared, and ensures that there is effective communication between the different areas.
“An organizational structure is a system that outlines how certain activities are directed
in order to achieve the goals of an organization. These activities can include rules,
roles, and responsibilities. The organizational structure also determines how information
flows between levels within the company” (www.investopedia.com, 2023.)

In relation to GSK, the diagram above represents the organisational structure of the
company. The company operates through a leadership team (GLT) and a board of
directors. The leadership team are responsible for business issues, and everyone is
responsible for different areas within the business. The board of directors are
responsible for maintaining how the organisation is run by controlling the rules and
practices within the company. This includes risk management, financial issues, and
strategies. “Our board of directors is responsible for corporate governance and is
accountable for the group's activities, strategy, risk managem8ent and financial
performance. Our Chief Executive Officer is responsible for managing the business and
is assisted by the GSK leadership team (GLT). Each member is responsible for a
specific part of the business” (www.gsk.com. 2023.)

In relation to health and safety measures within a scientific organisation, the board of
directors are solely responsible for reviewing and updating health and safety and risk
management Policies within the organisation, reviewing the organisations reports,
approves the organisational structure, and Code of Conduct in the organisation. “The
Board reviews our internal controls and risk management policies and approves our
