The need for discipline in uniformed public services

Discipline is the act of being able to follow orders and/ or rules without rebelling against them. Discipline
includes acts such as self-control and obedience to authority. Self-control is the act of being able to control
your emotions and thoughts about specific topics and knowing when to speak or not. Obedience to authority
obedience is when a person follows orders given to them by someone who is of a higher status than
themselves out of respect for both the person and the rank.

For any businesses and establishments to run smoothly there needs to be a set of rules and regulations;
however, these rules need to be even more strictly followed if the company serves the public. Rules are the
principles of companies which all employees must conform to, these principles can come in the form of laws,
customs or codes of conduct. All Public Services are moderated by rules to entrust that: all procedures are
consistent, orders are followed, no misuse of authority to, ensure that the establishment is not dishonoured,
and they are respectful to all members of the public and other service workers. It is important that discipline is
used as a method of increasing the productivity of the workforce.

Orders need to be followed to within the public services, during any time of the day and dangerous or life-
threatening situations can occur meaning decisions will have to be made to maintain and deal with the event.
These decisions can cover topics such as the appointing tasks, giving out clear instructions for what specific
teams need to do as well as ensuring that all employees understand and are confident on the actions they
need to carry out. Refusing to follow orders can lead to the workforce becoming less efficient and can cause
victims or the public to be in further danger because the Public Service worker didn’t follow their orders. The
Public Services all have a code of discipline which makes sure that all rules are regulations are followed by
employees.

The maintenance of order is how discipline is used in order for rules, orders and regulations to be correctly
followed. Orders are needed to be completed in an orderly or systematic manner, discipline is a crucial aspect
of ensuring that orders are completed efficiently. Every service has their own rules and regulations which
maintains good conduct, for example uniform being smart and correct at all times.

A reward is a recognition of someone’s good behaviour and attitude towards their job role, it can also be a
form of appreciation. Employees do not need to necessarily perform an act of kindness or something which is
extravagant, rewards can also be given for behaving as required and performing to the best of their ability. For
example, within the Armed Forces medals and awards can be given out for long-service or for their
contribution to the force.

Punishments are the opposites of rewards, it is used to discipline someone who has committed a negative at
such as; neglecting their duty, disrespecting a rank, or inappropriate behaviour. To avoid having to punish
employees it is crucial that recruits are put through training to ensure that all the members of the workforce
behave correctly and abide all rules, regulations and orders put to them. There are many different
punishments which can be used such as; reduction in pay, confinement to quarters or a dishonourable
discharge.

Consequences of a lack of discipline in the public services is that the efficiency of the service is reduced due to
its employees not complying with the rules and regulations. There are many different consequences that can
occur from the lack of discipline, these include; endangering others lives/ safety, formal or informal
punishment as well as the risk of injury. For example if a fire service crew doesn’t follow orders and evacuates
a building before they are told to they could run the risk of leaving victims inside of the building.

Discipline effects society as it gives the Public Services the ability to regulate society through different rules
and regulations which the ensure order is kept within communities. These rules and regulations includes laws
that makes crimes such as; murder, drug use and abuse illegal. Being disciplined makes the Public Services
more efficient meaning that they will gain more respect from the public, this lowers the likelihood of crimes
and events such as riots from occurring.
