care. One of these is the environment. If the environment gets in the way of
effective communication, then the receiver may not understand the message
that is being given to them. The environment may also support
communication if the setting, noise, seating, lighting is right.
The setting
One factor which will influence communication in health and social care
environments is the setting. When a service user and a professional are
talking about sensitive private information it’s important that the setting is
private as the service user may not feel comfortable talking about
confidential issues in a public space. The service user may not want to open
up if they feel people around them are listening. In health and social settings
there should be private rooms where professional’s and service users can
talk about personal information privately. In a community center or
residential care home there will need to be communal areas so that the
service users don’t feel isolated or lonely in their rooms. If there are no
communal areas the service users may not interact with others. Another
barrier within the setting is that if the room is too hot, stuffy or cold then this
could prevent communication, it could make people feel stressed, tired and
