Los padres de Moncho no son similares ya que simbolizan una
división esencial en España: la diferencia entre la política y la religión.
Uno de los mensajes principales de Cuerda es los peligros de la
situación cuando las instituciones antiguas, como la iglesia, tienen todo
el poder en un país. Rosa y Ramón cambian durante la película mientras
sus creencias y los papeles de la política evolucionan en España.

division in Spain: the difference between politics and religion. One of Cuerda’s
principle messages is the dangers of the situation when old-fashioned
institutions, like the Church, have all of the power in a country. Rosa and
Ramon change throughout the film whilst their beliefs and the roles of politics
evolve in Spain.)
Al principio de la película, Rosa se lleva bien con don Gregorio, y
dice “Estoy pensando en el maestro. “iQué buena persona!” a Ramón.
Se podría decir que está de acuerdo con las creencias del maestro, ya
que Rosa y su familia celebran con otros republicanos en la celebración
en el campo. Sin embargo, no olvidemos que Rosa es católica ferviente,
y su lealtad a la iglesia causa conflicto entre su religión y su amistad
con don Gregorio. Por ejemplo, Rosa quiere que su familia sea más
religiosa pero, también, espera que otras mujeres de la iglesia adopten
sus propias creencias republicanas. Esto es obvio cuando Rosa
, defiende a los republicanos y les recuerda que “gracias a la república
podemos votar las mujeres”. El papel más importante para Rosa es la
posición como madre. Es una madre cuyo principal objetivo es proteger
a sus hijos. Esta es la razón por la que tiene miedo de mostrar lo que su
marido cree, dado que los años treinta eran una época peligrosa para
los republicanos. Estos peligros causan el cambio del personaje de
Rosa durante “La Lengua de las Mariposas”.
(At the start of the film, Rosa gets on well with Don Gregorio, and she
says “I’m thinking about the teacher. What a good person!” to Ramón. It could
be said that she agrees with the beliefs of the teacher, since Rosa and her
family celebrate with other republicans at the celebration in the countryside.
However, let’s not forget that Rosa is a fervent Catholic, and her loyalty to the
church causes conflict between her religion and her friendship with Don
Gregorio. For example, Rosa wants her family to be more religious but, also,
she wishes that other women from the church will adopt their own republican
beliefs. This is obvious when Rosa defends the republicans and reminds them
that “thanks to the Republic we women can vote”. The most important role for
Rosa is the position as mother. She is a mother whose main objective is to
protect her children. This is the reason that she is scared to show what her
husband believes, given that the 1930s were a dangerous era for the
republicans. These dangers cause the change of Rosa’s character during
“The Butterflies’ Tongue”.)
A diferencia de Rosa, Ramón es ateo y está en contra de la iglesia
porque, como republicano, preferiría que la iglesia no tenga tanta
influencia en la política. Cree que los curas solo quieren más poder, y
dice a Rosa que “los curas… los curas no” van a misa para rezar.
Debemos destacar la importancia de la educación, que es uno de los
temas más importantes de la película, en las creencias de Ramón y
otros republicanos. Ramón apoya la libertad y igualdad para todos.
Como resultado, apoya la educación, uno de los valores más
importantes del republicanismo. Valora los maestros y las escuelas así
que dice “los maestros son las luces de la república”. Ramón es
miembro del partido de Manuel Azaña y es un republicano orgulloso,
que causa discusiones con su esposa. Tiene un póster de Azaña en su
taller y pasa mucho tiempo con otros republicanos, como don Gregorio.
