The Rise of Hitler

http://www.open.edu/openlearn/history-the-arts/history/hitlers-rise-and-fall-timeline

How was Germany affected by the depression?
-The effects of the slump were widespread. Many farmers had already been hit with high-
interest rates and falling agricultural prices
-By 1932 there were 6 million unemployed
-Industrial production fell 70% in 1932 compared to 1927
-Due to global protectionism, imports and exports fell dramatically, which prevented
German businesses from trading, leading to a mass loss in jobs, significant drops in salaries,
and less government income to spend on rebuilding the nation
-Under the Weimar Republic, many believed business would re-stabilise by itself, however,
this was not the case as the depression wounded Germany even further than predicted
-Many began to feel resentment towards the government, as their savings became
worthless and income became worthless, making them feel unwanted and rejected
-Those who managed to keep their jobs had their wages reduced, and lived in fear of losing
their jobs
-By 1932, 18,000 farmers had gone bankrupt
-By 1932, 50,000 businesses had gone bankrupt
-No government was prepared to intervene in any major way to reflate the economy
