Michael's emotional resilience will be compromised as a result of his clinical depression, this
can weaken Michaels ability to bounce back from setbacks or cope with stress, making it
difficult for him to develop connections and manage everyday tasks. Michael's social
relationships have been impacted by his depression; due to a lack of energy, he would
refuse to go out with his friends or would simply sit in a corner without interacting which
had led to them cutting ties with him, this makes him lonely and have no one to talk too. His
wife has also left him because he is unhappy and is concerned about him seeing his
deceased mother. Depression can make even simple tasks feel overwhelming and
exhausting. Michael's lack of energy and motivation may lead to difficulties in completing
everyday responsibilities, which is why he has giving up his job.

Michael's depression can be treated with a variety of medications, with antidepressants
being the most commonly used. SSRIs are among the most frequently prescribed
antidepressants. SSRIs operate by raising serotonin levels in your brain, which regulates
your mood, hunger, sleep, memory, social behaviour, and sexual desire allowing him to be
able to continue with everyday tasks. They have a number of negative effects, including
sexual dysfunction, headaches, weight fluctuations, increased anxiety, and dizziness, which
can make him more irritable and lethargic causing him to have a number of increased
problems like relationship issues. Some of the possible risks associated with SSRIs include
the risk of suicidal thoughts, particularly when the medication is first begun or when a new
dose is required, this could put him in a low mood where he wants to take his own life.
(Cleveland Clinic, 2023)

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) can be helpful for Michaels as it is helpful for someone
dealing with clinical depression and relationship issues. It helps to focuses on improving
communication and relationships. ECT is another treatment that involves sending an electric
pulse to the brain. ECT can be given for someone with depression if other treatments like
medication and therapies haven’t worked, but it is given as a last resort. It can be an urgent
treatment if your life is at risk because of not eating and drinking or suicidal thoughts.
(Mind, 2023)

Mental health problems can impact not only the person experiencing them but also their
loved ones who have to cope with the challenges of supporting that individual. When
Michael lost motivation and quit his job due to mental health issues, it can lead to financial
strain on his wife, who then has to manage the household expenses based on her wages.
This is a problem because the added financial pressure can cause significant stress for his
wife, making it harder for them to pay the bills and can cause stress on their relationship
from disagreements. (Hope therapy & counselling services, 2023)

When someone chooses not to seek help despite needing it, it can have significant
implications for themselves, their family, and the NHS. Michael tried to take his own life, he
does not want to accept any help, if he is released without any help, it can prolong his
suffering and potentially worsen his mental health, leading to more significant challenges in
the future. This decision can also impact their family members, as they may continue to
experience the stress and emotional strain of caring for a loved one who is not getting the
necessary support. According to statistics from the Mental Health Foundation, 71% of carers
have poor physical or mental health, implying that caring for someone with mental health

, can impact the mental health of the carer. If Michaels wife becomes an informal carer then
it could cause her to be affected. There is already a statistic that suggests that if a partner
has a mental health condition, then they are two to three times more likely to also have a
diagnosis. (Cepelewicz, 2016) If individuals do not seek help and their conditions
deteriorate, they may eventually require more extensive and costly treatments leading to
strain on the NHS.

Social exclusion occurs when people are left out and do not participate in events, leaving
them lonely and isolated. Social exclusion can have a significant impact on Michael in
numerous areas of his life, particularly his connections with family and friends.
Psychologically, social exclusion might cause feelings of loneliness and low self-esteem,
harming his mental health. If Michael doesn’t have social support may reduce his ability to
deal with challenges, leaving him feeling lonely. This may breakdown his communication in
his relationships, increasing his feelings of hopelessness.

The public's perception of Michael's depression might vary, as it can sometimes
be influenced by stigma around mental health. Some people may see depression as a
weakness or a personality fault, resulting in dismissive attitudes. According to a National
Mental Health Association survey, 43 percent of peoples believe depression is caused by a
weakness. (Hornung, 2017) The stigma attached to mental illness can lead to feelings of
shame and guilt, making him hesitant to seek help or open up, this can limit effective
communication in his relationships, adding additional tension and isolation. Finally, the
stigma surrounding depression can worsen Michael's difficulties in establishing connections
with his family and friends, increasing a cycle of misconception and isolation.
