1. Behavioural Characteristics
● Activity Levels: Reduced energy levels, tired. Withdraw from work, cannot get out of
bed. Can lead to psychomotor agitation, struggle to relax.
● Disruption to sleep and eating behaviour: Sufferers experience insomnia or
hypersomnia. Eating may increase or decrease, weight gain or loss.
● Aggression and self-harm: Sufferers are irritable, verbally or physically aggressive.
Can lead to self-harm, suicide attempts.

2. Emotional Characteristics
● Lowered mood: Patients describe themselves as ‘worthless’.
● Anger: Directed at the self or others, aggressive or self-harming behaviour.
● Lowered self-esteem: Sufferers described as a sense of self-loathing.

3. Cognitive Characteristics
● Poor concentration: Sufferers cannot stick with a task as they usually would. Poor
concentration and decision making interferes with the individual’s work.
● Dwelling on the negative: Focus on negative aspects, ignore the positives. Only
recalls unhappy events.
● Absolutist thinking: Sufferers see everything as all-bad, ‘black and white’ thinking.
