- 3 stages of cell cycle- interphase, mitosis and cytokinesis
Interphase - absence of chromosomes
1. G1- first growth phase
- Cells increase in size as new proteins and organelles are synthesised
- Cells are differentiated to make specific proteins
- Transcription takes place on nucleus, translation on rough endoplasmic reticulum
- Lots of aerobic respiration- normal metabolic roles occur
- Rate of completion of G1 can vary
- Longest stage

2. S - synthesis phase
- Semi conservative replication - DNA replicated
3. G2- second growth phase
- Organelles grow and divide
- Preparation for mitosis
