Learning Aim, A: Understand the importance of health and safety in scientific organisations

4 laws at Bradford College: RIDDOR, PPE, Risk Assessment and COSHH

Bradford College helps students to learn and achieve the required grade for their course. In science
practical are completed and exams and assignment work are done for an overall grade to be given.

Covid 19 Measures

Hand sanitisers are seen in some places throughout the college for students and some people distance
themselves from others to prevent any bacteria that might pass on through coughing or sneezing. Some
cover their mouths after sneezing so that the germs do not spread.

COSHH, PPE and hazardous symbols

In labs, chemicals are placed in beakers and test tubes for practical's to be completed without any harm.
If a chemical is hazardous a teacher instead would do the practical and students would normally write
any change that has happened on a table. Gloves, safety goggles and lab coats would be worn to
prevent any irritation that may occur and to prevent any chemical spilling onto your clothes. Gloves
would be worn to protect the skin from anything that is corrosive and harmful to you. Safety goggles
would be worn to stop any chemical spillage or vapours from going into your eyes. Hazardous symbols
are used to show you how dangerous a certain chemical is and how harmful it is to you and the
environment. If a chemical is harmful, you will not use it and instead a video will be shown explaining
what would happen.

RIDDOR

Accidents (even if they are minor) will be reported in the accident report which is at the premises. An
investigation into the accident at the college will be made to find out what the actual cause is, and
future control measures will be taken to prevent it from happening again. If any substance or equipment
was used whilst the accident happened, it will be reported, and the date and time will be recorded along
with where the accident took place.

Risk Assessment

Assessing the impact of threats and uncertainties and prioritising risks. Evaluating the likelihood of it
occurring again and how big the impact is. Managing the risks. Measuring the risks and reviewing them
each year. Specific hazards used with equipment need to be assessed so that the risk of injury is
prevented. Ranking how serious the risk is and if it is likely to happen again.
