Learning Aim C: Explore manufacturing techniques and testing for methods for an organic solid.

Aim: To prepare and produce a sample of paracetamol and test the purity

Paracetamol can reduce pain and relieve high temperatures.

Method:

1) Weigh the 4-aminophenol sample bottle.
2) Move the 4-aminphenol to a 100 ml conical flask in a fume closet, then add 15 ml of water.
3) Add 5ml of acetic anhydride, then firmly shake or stir the mixture.
4) In the fume cupboard, heat the conical flask using a boiling water bath.
5) weigh the sample bottle once more.
6) Heating for an additional 10 minutes after the solid has been dissolved
7) Take out the flask and let it cool on ice.
8) Clam the flask to collect the solid product using vacuum filtration, then thoroughly rinse it with
cold water (cooled on ice).
9) Weigh the empty test dish.
10) Place the sample in a sample dish that is marked.
11) Dry the remainder of the sample for 20 to 30 minutes in the oven.
12) calculate the production volume.

Recrystallisation:

1) To determine the purity of the impure paracetamol, conduct an IR and melting point test on it.
2) Transfer the crystals and 20 ml of warm water to a clean conical flask.
3) Calculate the weight of paracetamol by weighing the empty sample dish.
4) On a heated plate, bring to a boil until all the crystals are dissolved.
5) After letting it cool gradually, vacuum filter the sample and suction it dry.
6) Weigh a test dish that is empty.
7) Place the sample in the test dish.
8) Analyze a small sample using the melting point and IR techniques.
9) In the oven, dry the sample for 20–30 minutes.
10) Calculate your dried sample's yield percentage by weighing it.
