Unit 2B: Undertake calorimetry to study cooling curve

Title: keeping up the standards

First experiment:

The objective is to calibrate a liquid thermometer and a digital thermometer.

Equipment: an ice bath, a digital thermometer, and a liquid thermometer.

the following is the procedure:

Record the temperature three times at 0°C while submerging the liquid thermometer in an ice bath.

Create a results table with the mean for each of the three results.

Record the temperature three times at 100°C using a digital thermometer that has been placed in an ice
bath.

Create a results table with the mean for each of the three results.

Risk Assessment:

Liquid- spillages- step away from it/ clean it up

Slips and trips from spillages from the ice bath.

Freezing water- cold skin may hurt

0°C 1 2 3 Mean
Digital 1.7 1.1 0 1.4
Liquid 0 2 2 2

100°C 1 2 3 Mean
Digital 9.7 9.8 9.9 9.8
Liquid 99 99 96 98

, Conclusion

For the digital thermometer the results went down slowly each time, but for the liquid the results went
down quicker because the ice was melting.

Percentage error= 2-1.4=0.6 x 100= 60%

9.8/98=0.1 x 100= 10%

Second experiment:

Calculate the freezing points of paraffin wax and stearic acid.

Equipment:.

wood-based clamp.

wooden latch.

50 °C water bath.

heating tubes.

Paraffin Wax.

Steric Acid.

Stopwatch.

digital thermometer.

liquid thermometer.

Evaluation of risk:

Waxes: Skin-irritating.

Electric water baths are dangerous because they can shock you, so keep your hands dry.

Cleaning up liquid spills.

spills can cause slipping and falling.

Glass can cut your skin, so avoid touching it until it has been cleaned up.

Don't hover your hand over the bath because the heat could burn your skin. 15 seconds should pass
after the boiling tube has cooled.
