Unit 1: Assignment 4
Distinction

In this section of this assignment I will be analysing how two Travel and Tourism
organisations from different component industries are responding to changing trends and
factors within the sector. I will be looking at how these organisations respond to terrorism,
increased frequency of holidays, opportunities for adventure, changing/new destinations,
natural disasters and health warnings, epidemics and pandemics.

Terrorism: (Factor)
Organisations within the Travel and Tourism sector have to respond to terrorist attacks
quickly, this is because they have to be prepared if a terror attack was to happen but to also
take in the considerations to their customer and staff’s well-being and safety. Terrorism is a
serious trend which affects the tourism industry in a negative way. It is mainly transport and
travel agents/tour operators who have to respond to these changing trends and factors such
as terrorism.
Transport such as airlines have to respond to terrorism because they have to ensure that
they are taking extra safety precautions for the safety of their staff and customers, airlines
also have to respond and be aware of terrorism due to the previous attacks which have
been based on aircrafts or involving aircrafts.
Airports and airlines are responding to terrorism currently by enforcing more and secure
security checks within the airport to ensure passengers are not brining dangerous weapons
or unsuitable items, this also makes it a lot harder to fly freely or cause a terrorist attack
involving a large amount of passengers or aircraft. Airport security also involves a strict hand
baggage rules and how much/what is allowed on the aircraft, this is to make passengers feel
a lot safer and calmer whilst on the flight.
Airlines are also responding to terrorist attacks by cancelling/post pone flights to certain
destinations where a terrorist attack has recently or frequently occurred or stopping the
flying routes to these destinations in order to protect people from being in danger at these
destinations and to reduce the risk of a terrorist attack happening on or involving a flight.
After the 9/11 terrorist attack on the twin towers the entire airspaces of the United States
and Canada were closed, expect for military, police and medical flights. Domestic flights
coming into the area of where the attack happened were diverted to the nearest avaliable
airport and United Airlines cancelled all flights worldwide temporarily due to the attack.
Grounded passengers and planes were also searched and thoroughly checked for security
checks in case of another terror threat.
However, British Airways deal with terrorism attacks and future potential attacks in a calm
and sensible manner, they do this by not cancelling or suspending any flights which are
supposed to fly out to the destination where the terror attack has occurred.
