What is an Ester?
An ester is an organic substance produced when an organic acid
and an alcohol condense. The objective of this practical is the
esterification of a carboxylic acid into an ester. The scientific
technique of esterification creates esters by first creating ethyl
ethanoate and water through a reflux process, and then distilling
the ethyl ethanoate and water separately. Reflux is the
condensation of vapours, while distillation is the separation of
liquids by cooling and heating.
The purpose of this practical is the esterification of a carboxylic
acid.
