Introduction - What is human resource planning and why it is important to an organisation?
Internal planning
External planning
Employees Skills
Planning is about understanding the skills of the current workforce and how it will need to
change to meet future needs. ‘’Human resource planning is the continuous process of
systematic planning to achieve optimum use of an organization's most valuable asset — its
human resources. The objective of HRP is to ensure the best fit between employees and jobs
while avoiding manpower shortages or surpluses.’’
Tesco is a British Multinational retailer; they mostly sell everyday groceries and other goods
such as clothes, DVD’s, electronics, toys etc. Tesco is widely known by everyone in the UK.
Tesco has recently opened a new store called Jack’s which is a supermarket chain where
they sell discounted products in order to win customers against their competitors Aldi and
Lidle because many customers want low priced products that Aldi and Lidle provide and
Tesco does not. ‘’Tesco has started a new front in its battle to win back shoppers from Aldi
and Lidl with the launch of a new discount chain Jack’s that promises to be the “cheapest in
town”. The first two Jack’s stores – named after the supermarket giant’s founder Jack Cohen
– will open on Thursday. Tesco’s chief executive, Dave Lewis, said the chain would sell low-
priced, predominantly British food and appeal to the “economically challenged that need a
bargain and the affluent shopper that wants a bargain”.
Tesco requires their staff to have many skills such as good communication, teamwork,
problem-solving, and more. These are the main basic skills that Tesco’s employees are
required to have as it impacts the overall performance of the business. The human resource
is carried out by the human resource department. The human resources department is
responsible for recruitment and selection for business. They find new employees for the
company by advertising the job roles, organising the interviews and then finally selecting the
right employees for a particular job position.
They also arrange and provide training for new employees and skills development for the
already existing employees. The human resource planning benefits Tesco to find the right
place for the stores, making sure that the staff have the right skills, experience,
qualifications and are in the correct job roles by looking at the workforce profile. Planning is
important for the future change and for workforce internal and external change, for
example, if a member of the staff leaves the business or the business needs to hire new
employees due to a new store opening or for new technology systems being used in the
stores. Human resource planning overall will help Tesco to find the best-talented employees
which will increase their performance and lead them to success.
Internal planning
Internal planning is the planning that happens inside the organisation. Internal planning
benefits Tesco when opening Jack’s, as it helps them to find the right place for the store,
and find the right staff with the right skills required. Internal planning helps Tesco to recruit
