SSP5014: TASK 5
Critique of Olympic Lifting

Pros and Cons:
Weight/Olympic lifting (OL) exercises “improve athletic performance…and train almost all
muscle groups” (Hori et al., 2005), and so it is recommended to purchase a good OL
platform with a barbell and plated weights instead of several weight-machines as a more
economic option when purchasing gym equipment. Additionally, the purchase of the platform
will also prevent risk of injuries occurring – which are lower than those in many sports – as
the barbell is always dropped at the end of the lift and could break without a platform (Hori et
al., 2005). If any other injuries arise from OL, it would be from poor technique and execution
(Hori et al., 2005).
OL has been seen to correlate strongly with peak power (PP) output (Carlock et al., 2004) –
suggesting that the greater the OL capabilities possessed by either men or women, the
greater the PP output generated – which is good because there have been correlations
already established between increased PP and explosive strength (e.g. weighted jump
squats, bench press, shoulder flexion and throwing), and so by increasing PP via OL, one
may target all the pre-mentioned derivatives of explosive strength. As with the nature of
correlations, what works one way may be expected to work the other; and so by increasing
max strength, an increase in PP can also be expected because of the strong relationships
these physical qualities are seen to have in other studies mentioned by Carlock et al. (2004).
Bluntly put, “Stronger more powerful athletes lift more weight” (Carlock et al., 2004); and as
explained by Chui (2007), OL will develop maximal strength as a position similar to the well-
renown ‘power/athletic position’ in many, if not all, sports is hit during the second pull phases
of snatches and cleans – eliciting a very specific stress which will lead to direct
correspondence for these sports.

On top of this, OL movements “require great balance, coordination (inter- and intra-
muscular), flexibility” (Chui et al., 2007), and so without these physical qualities, performance
can either be limited or capped.
Correct and proper technique is essential for safety of the athlete, as discussed, and
learning it can take some time; However, Hori et al. (2005) have found literature to aid the
practitioner in teaching the techniques of a Snatch or Clean, because a qualified coach is
advised to “establish the beginning of a sound technique” (Chui, 2007).

With respect to the safety aspect of OL, it is argued to be the safest form of training
to develop high-load speed strength because of the lack of intention to decelerate
