Evaluating the recruitment and selection process of a large business

In this assignment I will be looking into a large business – Marks and Spencer’s and will be looking
into their recruitment and selection processes and seeing how these methods help relate to the
businesses success. I will evaluate each process and draw reasoned conclusions.

Synopsis

The business I have chosen to investigate is Marks and Spencer’s. Marks and Spencer’s now a multi
international organisation, was established in 1884 by a polish refugee. The business began as a
small street market stall in the city of Leeds, and through time and development, the small business
was able to grow and gain popularity. This is because in 1894 Marks (the polish refugee) went into
partnership with Thomas Spencer (previously an employee for a whole sale company, book keeping)
where by 1926, Marks and Spencer Limited became a public company. The business currently offers
a banking service, floristry service and well as selling clothing such as school uniform, homeware
items, and food, which is the most successful aspect of Marks and Spencer’s. This is due to the
multiple options able to suit individual needs. Having in store bakery’s, café’s and fresh deli’s, it
helps add to the scope of the large food halls where meals are offered to suit families. In addition to
this, there is food available for consumers to have the choice of having a finer dining experience
where Marks and Spencer’s offer deluxe cheeses and fine wines. Overall, their catering options
alone, show how the business is able to suit the needs of a wide range of customers. Marks and
Spencer’s main competitors include Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and Tesco belonging to the tertiary sector.
They currently have more than 80,000 employees worldwide with 979 stores in the UK complete
with 615 that are used as food halls. Their headquarters are based in Westminster, London having
the positive reputation known for being a strong British brand.

Workforce planning

Workforce planning relates to the process of ‘ensuring an organisation has current and future access
to the human capital it needs to perform effectively.’ It is about looking at the best methods within
the business such as cost-effectiveness to help employers and potential employees.

Marks and Spencer’s works alongside with JDA (Consultancy Company) as well as Microsoft teams to
ensure their workforce planning is put into the correct practise. Through this scheduling, it enabled
Marks and Spencer’s to ensure that at each of its 979 stores have the right colleague working the
right shift at the right time.

Recruitment

Recruitment is the ‘process of finding and hiring the best and most qualified candidate for a job
opening, in a timely and cost-effective manner.’ Having efficient workers in your organisation, helps
your business grow and having the right people in a team, leads to success in the business.

Recruitment methods – Job Advertisement

A job advertisement is where a business will inform potential candidates that there is a position
available within their organisation. These can be both internal and external. At Marks and Spencer’s,
there are 19 jobs available overall and some of these include in-store café jobs as well as delivery
drivers under distribution jobs. Below, are two examples of Marks and Spencer’s providing a job
advertisement online on www.indeed.co.uk.

This job advertisement for a Department Manager provides
important information quickly and effectively, giving a clear
and brief overview of what job is available. Through clicking on
the main job title, the webpage then directs you to another
link where there is a larger page of information available which

gives a detailed job description, a list of key responsibilities as well as a guide on the application
process. For this particular job, the information states ‘You’ll initially complete a short online
application form and then take part in a short video interview. If successful, you’ll be invited to an in
store assessment.’

A second example of Marks and Spencer’s advertising is through their own website. A recent job
advert from Marks and Spencer’s is the offering of a role to become a a Sales floor Customer
Assistant. Again, like on www.indeed.co.uk, there is a job description, information about the salary
and also what is expected of you as a new employee. In addition to this, there is also a picture
showing a vague overview of what the shop floor looks like, as well as the recruitment process.
Unlike www.indeed.co.uk there is no brief bullet pointers on the job but instead all the information
is in one place. If looking into becoming a Sales floor Customer Assistant the recruitment process
involves this: ‘ Before anything else, you’ll need to complete an online assessment. This will involve a
customer service based situational judgment questionnaire. If you’re successful, you’ll be invited to a
face-to-face assessment where you'll take part in a role play and, if successful in that, an interview
with a Line Manager.’

Job description

A job description is a document that has purposeful information to give interested and potential
employees an insight to the roles involved within the job and what is expected of them. A job
description is important from the businesses perspective because it ensures that any applicants
interested, marry up to the needs of the role as best as possible.
