Part 1: Information about the Organization You Selected

, I will be discussing Cummins, Inc. This company is in Columbus, Indiana where it first

started over 100 years ago. Cummins is known best for its manufacturing of one of the leading

diesel engines in the world.

Cummins, Inc. has over 60,000 employees and has facilities in every region except for

North Korea. If you would like to see more about Cummins, Inc. you can visit their website at

www.Cummins.com. Cummins manufactures diesel, electric, hydrogen engines and most of the

components that make up those engines.

I have been lucky enough to be a part of Cummins for almost three (3) years. I was hired

as a direct hire and am the administrative assistant for the Global Quality Leader of the Emission

Business unit of Cummins. I work at every aspect of this team by supporting each level of

business on the team. Because of this work I have learned about many processes that Cummins

use and believe that their 7 Step problem solving process is one that they us in all business units

of the corporation.

Part 2: Information about the Process You Selected

The 7 Step Problem Solving process is the process that Cummins uses to determine what

has caused a fault in one of the emission products and what is needed to correct that fault. This

process is in place to help our customers and service centers have little to no down time with the

product. Because Cummins holds most to all the patents to its product, so it makes it hard for

outside companies to solve issues with the product.

The 7 Step process has many stakeholders and people that have a part in the process. The

stakeholders are Cummins and the customer. The customer can be one company or many as

Cummins provides product to other engine manufactures such as PACCAR and Navistar.

, Cummins is a stakeholder because of its promise to stand behind the product and provide

excellent quality and service.

The steps to this process include the following:

 Definition of the problem – determining there is an issue by the number of

occurrences for a fault code or service reports.

 Data Collection – gathering details of the failure. What was the product

doing at malfunction…what did the service person do…was the trouble

shooting tree followed?

 Cause Analysis – this is the point at which they determine what the actual

cause was and if there is anything that can be done to ease the downtime

until a long-term solution can be found. This helps to ease the burden on

the customer.

 Solution Planning – this is the point that all the cause and effect have been

determined and now it is time to figure out the long-term solution.

 Evaluate Effectiveness – this is where the solution is applied, and it is

determined how effective the solution is. How feasible is it that the

solution can result in fixing the issue and not have any more reoccurring

problems?

 Standardization – at this point is when the solution is put into standard

practice. It is either implemented as part of the trouble shooting tree, a

design change has happened, or a kit has been put together to add in fixing

the problem.
