Reflection on micro-organizational behaviour

Management is a unique course that helped me to examine and understand the basics

in the empirical research and theory in the field of micro-organizational behaviour. It also

helped me to understand the people’s behaviour in an organization. To investigate how

organizational structures, affect human behaviour within an organization, organizational

behaviour as the field of study focusses on that. When I talk about micro-organizational

behaviour, I refer to group and individual dynamics in an organizational setting. Various

concepts including job satisfaction, motivation, team building, decision making and

leadership comprises some of the facets of organizational behaviour. This study will reflect

on topics covered in the course. These topics include foundations of employee motivations,

the individual behaviour, personality and values and the third one will be the applied

performances practices. The study will further explore one or two theories in reflection of

every selected topic. In this reflective study, I will apply the theories to examine my strengths

and blind spots. I will also use the theories to evaluate and examine how I understand, relate

and work with others. Through the reflective study, I will discuss the lessons I have learnt

regarding my leadership style, personality, working in a team, my approach to conflict,

communication and multi-cultural awareness.

Foundation of employee motivation is one of the critical topics I studied in the course.

It is through the topic that I learnt the difference between motivation and employee

engagement. Whereas employee engagement covers the cognitive and emotional motivation

and the self-efficacy to perform a task, motivation refers to the forces that are found within a

person affecting the direction, persistence and intensity of voluntary behaviour (Robbins and

Judge, 2007). Additionally, in this topic I was able to distinguish the concept needs and

drives. I came to understand that drives are the prime movers of behaviour by activating

emotions. They form the neutral states that give individuals the energy to maintain internal
