The ABCD mnemonic visual reminder (Icon) assists in the recall of the concepts and principles behind the ABCD's and improves communications during the event. ABCD mnemonic provides a common language and structure for a measured response when an individual, team, or crew is executing a routine task, or when under duress from a more complex situation resulting from added conditions, crew factors or task loading Risk- green little chance of serious error Risk- yellow Higher chance of serious error Risk- Red very high chance of serious error Risk- Swooshing arrow Return to good situational awareness Target section used during team communication to focus one or more individuals into an understanding of situational conditions, or an individual can use it as a self-assessment tool to increase SA How to identify when shipmates are in the yellow or red Making errors, poor communication, overloaded, fatigue, complacency, not following procedures communication Balance resources make the correct decisions to mitigate risks Prior planning ensures more resources are available, discuss resources to reduce risks. Red Block policies, procedures, and routines (General orders, recruit guide, and making your rack) Green Block checklist (instructions for rack layout) Aqua Block Automation (fire alarms, lights, alarm clocks) Yellow Block briefings and external resources (Supervisor, shipmate, chaplin) Communication who needs to know? who can help? ensure everyone knows their part and let people know when things change gray block Knowledge, skill, and attitude (training, practice, drills) Communicate to others Ensure everyone knows what is expected and what could go wrong. communicate while the event is going on to help everyone maintain SA Communication: Green Ability to maintain situational awareness, decide how to reprioritize, and keep everyone in the loop.
