Boekverslag Ausländer, Bram ter Harmsel, H4B
Connection
The book Ausländer is about a boy named Pyotr. His parents have died and he ends up in an
orphanage. One day he is being inspected. The people who did it thought he looked like a real
German. They told him to go to Germany. Ausländer means foreigner, Peter had to go to Germany
even though he was not even a German. Therefore, this title fits this story and the main character.
Characterization
Pyotr is the main character, later he is also called Peter. Peter was a smart boy who could often be
found in the library. If he disagreed with someone he would show it. He could also get angry if
someone made a nasty remark about him. Peter was sent to Germany. There he joined the
hitlerjugend, the hitlerjugend is a group of boys who are trained to become a soldier later. Peter met
a girl and fell in love: Anna. Anna and her family helped Jews (which was punishable by death) and
later Peter started helping them too. This is an example that makes me know that Peter is the main
character, because everything actually revolves around him just like in the rest of the story.
Favourite character
So my favorite person in the book is Peter, because Peter actually almost always resisted the
Germans and wouldn't just do anything for them. I think the most interesting and fun person in the
book because he actually goes through a lot of adventures too. Like helping Jews together with
Anna's family. This again I think is brave of him.
Development
Peter does make a development in the story. In the beginning of the story peter thought the things
Hitler was doing were all good and supported him. When he was sent to Germany and he got to
know people at the hitlerjugend of which Anna is one he found out that hitler is not a good person at
all. So at the end of the book he doesn't think hitler is a good person either. So Peter has made a
development in the story.
Conflict
The most significant conflict that I think is in this story is that Peter went to flee with Anna and her
mother. Then they finally ended up in Sweden where they got on a ferry. They went onto the ferry
and met Anna's mother there. When they ran into each other a man noticed that Peter, Anna and
Anna's mother were on the boat {they were wanted } he threatened them with a submachine gun.
But when the ship's whistle rang the man was startled and they pushed him into the water. Shortly
after, they arrived safely in Sweden. And they had escaped death.
