1. Sketch the developments in multimedia. What do you expect to be
the commercial impact of multimedia in the (near) future?
(4 marks)
Developments in multimedia
√ Compression techniques - Compression techniques such as MPEG,
JPEG, and MP3 have made it possible to store and transmit large
multimedia files over the internet without significant loss of quality.
This has revolutionized the way we consume and share multimedia
content.
√ Advancements in hardware - The development of faster and more
powerful processors, graphics cards, and memory has stimulated the
creation and playback of high-quality multimedia content. This has
led to the increase of multimedia devices such as smartphones,
tablets, and smart TVs.
√ Social media and user-generated content - The rise of social media
platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, etc has enabled users to
create and share multimedia content on a massive scale,
democratizing the creation and spread of multimedia content.
√ Interactive multimedia - The development of interactive multimedia
has allowed users to engage with multimedia content in more
immersive and engaging ways. Examples include virtual reality,
augmented reality, and interactive kiosks.
Future commercial impact
, √ E-commerce - Multimedia is expected to allow customers to see
more interactive product experiences, such as virtual try-ons.
√ Healthcare - Multimedia has already been used to improve
healthcare, with telemedicine and medical simulations becoming
more widespread. In the future, we can expect to see even more
innovative uses of multimedia, such as VR-powered pain
management, and AI-powered disease diagnosis.
√ Advertising - In the future, interactive multimedia ads will become
more common, allowing for greater engagement and personalization.
√ Entertainment - The entertainment industry has already been
transformed by multimedia, with video streaming services like Netflix
and YouTube becoming the norm. In the future, we can expect to see
even more immersive and interactive entertainment experiences,
such as VR-powered movies and live events, and interactive live
streaming platforms.
√ Education - In the future, it is expected that video-based learning will
become more interactive and personalised with the use of AI-
powered adaptive learning platforms.
2. Discuss the factors that play a role in the development of
multimedia information systems. What research issues are there?
When do you expect the major problems to be solved?

Factors influencing the development of multimedia systems
√ Technological advances - Advancements in hardware and software
technologies have been a driving force behind the development of
multimedia information systems, eg. improvements in processors,
memory, and storage have facilitated the creation and playback of
high-quality multimedia content, while compression techniques have
made it possible to store and transmit large multimedia files over the
internet.
