PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS

RESPONSE TO EXCERPT

1. The theorist Freud’s insights apply to a great extent within the novel. All aspects of
Freud’s theory applies to the novel like the ego, id and superego. The ego is the mediator
of the superego and the Id and we can see this in some parts of the novel. Everybody has
an id, ego and superego. The problem comes when you need to identify them. Some
people have stronger superegos or stronger ids. This means that one wins over the other.
Sometimes our actions to achieve our id is heavily based on the morality principle and
sometimes its not. Sometimes the ego mediates between this. In the novel, there is a
variation of every characters use of these psychic agents and how they impact the
character itself. It applies a lot to one of the main characters in the novel Miss Havisham.
Miss Havisham’s Id is to harm men in any way possible. But the reality principle
prevents her from doing it directly. So to accomplish her inner desires she recruits
Estella, adopts her to get the job done and fulfill her inner desires. Estell has no superego
as she insults Pip because he is a poor and lower class individual. She also slapped him
showing she has no morality principle does whatever her Id desires. However Miss
Havisham is not as successful in inflicting pain on Pip but her motive is somewhat
completed. Pip also has the desire of becoming a gentleman, his reality principle makes
him achieve the status of a gentleman by gaining education and working hard. He knows
that’s the only way he can acquire Estella. Mrs.Joe, Pip’s sister has no morality principle
the way she abuses both her husband and brother. In society a woman is liked as a nice
and kind lady while Mrs. Joe is completely opposite of what society expects of a
woman’s personality. She is harsh and does not care about societal norms. Like this
throughout the novel Sigmund’s theory can be applied and be discussed using different
characters in the novel. Psychoanalytic theory might not be the main theory that applies
to the whole novel but it can be applied to a substantial extent in the novel which could
lead to more analyzation of characters and themes.

RESPONSE TO THE CHOSEN QUOTE

2. “I’ve put away money, only for you to spend. When I was a hired-out shepherd in a
solitary hut, not seeing no faces but faces of sheep till I half-forgot wot men’s and
women’s faces wos like, I see yourn. . . . I see you there a many times plain as ever I see
you on them misty marshes. ‘Lord strike me dead!’ I says each time—and I goes out in
the open air to say it under the open heavens—‘but wot, if I gets liberty and money, I’ll
make that boy a gentleman!’ And i done it. Why, look at you, dear boy! Look at these
here lodgings of yourn, fit for a lord! A lord? Ah! You shall show money with lords for
