Psychology has roots in Philipsophy

Herman von helmgaltz (1821-1894) meausres how long it takes for someone to
respond to pain (step on their foot)

Helholt started measureing phenomenon, his approach was considered emphircal.

Wilhelmina Wundt, father of psychology, studied the conscious expierence (1879)
did introspection: he trained individuals, objectively observe their conscious
expierence, measures reaction times under different condition.

Structure of consciousness- what are the individuals components of the mind??

Structuralism: subjective (everything sees and feels differently), need very
educated ppl

Wundt’s idea: the mind is composed of thoughts, feelings and images.

Structuralism was the idea in Germany while in America it is the idea of functionlism
found by Willam James

Willam James: interested in Darwin’s theory of evolution, interested in the function
of the whole brain. Believed in introspection.

Functionalism: focus on the mind as a whole, and how mental activities help an
individual to fit into their environments.

Gestalt psychology: sensory expierence can be broke down into individual parts.
But the whole is what the individual expierneces as perception.

Experimental branch: composed of Von helmholtz, Wundt, James, Gestalt, trying to
discover and play around with how we work

Freud: first person to point out there is an unconscious mind: where the deep
wants, desires, behaviors come from.
