Longitudinal research: uses correlation across time to test a casual chain (ex:
asking the class on the first days a question then ask again weeks later.)
Example violence and video games: violent games lead to violent behavior? Add a
third variable: “lack of parental supervision” to stable the correlation.
Independent Variable: the variable that you manipulate (in this case, violent vs
calm video h games)
-predictor variable
Dependent variable: The variable that we are ultimately interested in (in this case,
behavior)
-outcome variable
Control group: the group that does not receive the intervention( ⼲预）
Experimental group: the group that receives the intervention
Need to make each of the participants has equal coppotuntiy to be assigned to the
control or experimental group.
Defining your dependents variable: important=dictates how you measure it and is
called your operational definition.
-influences the conclusion you can draw from it
-indeed, relationship between video games and violent behavior is unclear bad we
aren’t consistent in what we mean by “violent behavior”
-for instance a study might measure angry verbal behavior: news might make links
to mass shooting
