Talent Predictors and Development

There’s four main types of talent.

Unidimensional talent - when there is limited transferable skills that can be used in another
sport. An athlete example would be a marathon runner would not be able to run as well as in
a 400m event than they would in a marathon.

Multidimensional talent - It is a range of transferable skills that can be used in different sports
positions for events. An example of an athlete that has this type of talent could be Cristano
Ronaldo, this is because he can transfer all his skills and adjust them to be able to play in a
different position.

Unisport talent -This is where the athlete is elite in just one sport. An example of that could
be Novack Djokovic who competes at the highest level in tennis. The reason for this is
because he started at a young age. Because he has only played his chosen sport the whole
time from a young age he would struggle to compete in other sports at a high level.

Multisport talent - Where the athlete has the ability to play a range of sports at a high level.
Micahel Jordan, one of the best basketball players who is six time NBA champion and ten
time NBA top scorer, also played for Chicago White sox baseball team.

There are 5 predictors of talent for individuals

The Physical Predictors - You need to have in mind all the factors that can be developed,
one of them is the height of the individual. After you measure their height think of the
advantages and disadvantages of their current height in their sport. For example in football
the taller you are the more likely you are to win possession in the air. Measuring their mass
is also a factor as in most sports excessive weight is a major disadvantage this is because
you’re usually slower. However if you’re a defensive player in American Football it’s very
helpful as you can use your mass to block players off and make big tackles.

Physiological Predictors - These consist of Aerobic Capacity and Anaerobic Capacity.
Aerobic is the maximum capacity for oxygen consumption in the body for example long
continuous duration activities. Anaerobic is the body’s ability to work without oxygen, an
example of this is short duration activities like sprints.

Sociological Predictors - They are all about your early life of starting a sport and the
background of it. Parental support is needed especially at a younger age as you will need
their support for travel as you won't be able to travel to and from training. It is crucial that you
get their full support and concentration so that they are able to motivate you and tell you how
you can improve.

Psychological factors - They are to do with the individual's mind and how they anticipate
their sport. There’s many things that will affect the psychological predictors, confidence,
anticipation, game intelligence and decision making. Decision making the higher the level
the individual is will mean that they will make the right decision more frequently than a lower
