Rules, Regulation and Officiating in sport

Pitch layout - A football pitch is split into two halves. It is
divided by a halfway line which has a semi circle on each
side. The bigger box is known as the 18 yard box and the
inner being the 6 yard box.

Number of players - Each team has 10 outfield players and
1 goalkeeper.

Facilities - There is a changing room for each team usually
having showers and an official changing room.

Scoring - To score a goal, the team has to progress into the other teams half and score in
the oppositions net which results in 1 goal.

Playing surface - Most games are played on grass however due to poor weather conditions
or playing in a forgein country it can be changed to play on artificial grass.

Substitutions - During a game a total of 3 changes can be made out of the 6 on the bench.
They can be brought on at any time during the game.

Equipment - Shin Pads are required to be worn and football boots are needed, as well as
an appropriate sized football.

Methods of victory - The way to gain all 3 points in a league match is to score more goals
than the opposition. If during a cup game or knockout stage, and the score is tied it will
continue to extra time of 15 minute halves. If the game is still drawn it will go to a penalty
shootout where 5 players will take a penalty, and will continue to sudden death if a winner is
not found.

Fouls and sanctions - A foul is given when you attempt to tackle and don't win possession
of the ball. This can result in a yellow card being a warning. If you then proceed to take
another foul, this is then a second yellow card, which results in a red card. Meaning you are
sent off the pitch. If you concede a foul in a dangerous tackle, this can result in a straight red
card.

Time - The duration of the match is 90 minutes. With a 15 minute half time break after the
first 45 minutes. In some cup competitions, if its a draw it’ll go to extra time which is a further
30 minutes.

Safety - Shin pads are worn to protect players from accidental collisions that could cause
broken ankles or shins. Boots are checked before the game to make sure they are safe to
use. For example, the studs are not sharp or too long.
