Computer Maintenance - Unit 2 - P8
Computers require regular cleaning and maintenance in order for them to
perform adequately. Some cleaning is clearing the computer of physical dirt
like dust, other cleaning and maintenance is keeping the software at a good
condition, so the computer can work at its best performance possible. The aim
of cleaning and maintenance is to prevent problems occurring and extend the
life of the computer. Routinely cleaning and maintaining computer systems
also saves time when it comes to diagnosing and fixing faults.
Some cleaning and maintenance doesn’t need to be done as often as others.
Depending on what the cleaning and maintenance is, it needs to be done
either daily, weekly, monthly, yearly or infrequently. Daily maintenance
includes virus scans, and backup of changed files. Weekly maintenance
includes cleaning the mouse and checking it for any wear, cleaning the
keyboard and checking for any broken or stuck keys, cleaning the monitor,
cleaning the printer, deleting any temporary files, and defragmentation.
Monthly maintenance includes cleaning the outside of the computer case, and
backing up all files. Yearly maintenance includes checking the motherboard
and cleaning adapter card contacts. Infrequent tasks include keeping a written
record of hardware and software configuration.
You can set software maintenance tasks to remind you to carry out task such
as disk clean up, backing up files, and defragmentation. You can also schedule
them to happen automatically at times that suit you.
It depends on the maintenance task as to whether the computer has to be
switched on or off. Maintenance tasks like virus scans and defragmentation
require the computer to be on whilst they are done. Whereas maintenance
tasks such as cleaning the monitor and cleaning inside the computer case
require the computer to be switched off. Other tasks like cleaning and checking
the mouse and keyboard the computer can be either on or off.
Computers need regular attention to keep the hardware clean and prevent
issues with any of it. Any hardware can get dusty and dirty and when this starts
to build up you get a growing layer and dirt that will continue to get thicker
until cleaned. The dirtier the hardware gets the more at risk it becomes to
problems occurring especially if the dirt settles on the inside of the computer
as it can block airways. If the airways of a computer get blocked, then it can
prevent it from being able to cool which could lead to overheating which will
cause components to fail. You should ensure that you get the correct cleaning
