Saiful Sport Injuries Assignment 2 Unit 18

P3, M2 & D2

The physiological responses to injury refer to how the body responds to an injury right after it
happens and how it adapts over time. Injured soft tissue, such as a muscle, normally begins
to heal within 24 hours of the injury. Swelling is one of the first symptoms that soft tissue has
been damaged. It will be uncomfortable as the wounded region begins to swell. Since the
swelling puts pressure on the nerves surrounding the injured tissue, this happens.

Damaged Tissue:

When the body sustains an injury, it can respond in a variety of ways. The primary damage
response mechanism is triggered when body tissue is damaged. The two key symptoms of
damaged tissue are pain and inflammation, and when the body recognizes these, the
damage response system is triggered. The healing process is initiated by the blood clotting
as it exits the wound, which can help minimize the risk of infection and avoid further blood
loss by sealing the wound. An abrasion to the knee, for example, could result in pain and
inflammation, followed by blood clotting around and over the wound to begin the healing
process. The injured area will typically appear red because the blood vessels supplying the
site dilate, rendering the injured area hot and tender to the touch. Because of the pain and
swelling, the affected region may have diminished function or be completely unable to
function.

Healing response:

The first stage is vasoconstriction, in which blood vessels leading to the wound constrict,
limiting blood flow to the injured region.
• Platelets sprint to the scene, caused by enzymes leaked from the broken blood vessel.
These sticky blood cells clump together and cling to the broken blood vessel's edges,
forming a plug. Because of the pain and swelling, the affected region may have a diminished
or complete inability to function. The severity of the signs and symptoms would be
proportional to the severity of the injury; the greater the severity, the greater the
inflammatory effects. The body repairs itself vigorously over a span of 48 to 72 hours and up
to 21 days. The body's clotting system seals the torn blood vessels' ends, preventing further
blood plasma from escaping into the surrounding tissues. The healing/repair process starts
after the acute effects of the injury have subsided. This consists of the following:

● Absorption of swelling
● Removal of debris and blood clot
● Growth of new blood capillaries
● Development of initial fibrous scar tissue.

The cells become active after 12 hours and for the first four days, and new capillary blood
vessels develop and expand to create a new circulation in the region.
