Assignment C - Part 3
Essay
600-700 word Essay on Using Authentic Materials and the Internet
A. The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:
When teaching English to students, no matter their level, I feel that using authentic
materials is much more conducive to learning about “the real world”, in which we live. The
use of the English language in authentic materials such as newspaper articles is more
accurate and geared to the way we actually speak with each other. As well, the sheer
volume of authentic materials available on the internet nowadays, means that there truly is
something for everyone regardless of background, ethnicity or religion.
B. Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes
to text, if applicable.
I chose the publication of “Thrive Market” from the CNN website because there is so much
focus right now on Health and Wellness around the world, given the pandemic we are
currently experiencing, and just simply because people are becoming more conscious
about adopting a healthier lifestyle, I felt it would be an interesting topic appealing to all
students regardless of age, sex, or background. We all have to eat after all!
The publication also offered much vocabulary that would be beneficial to learn as they
were not common words used in everyday speaking. I also chose to include 2 idioms
which I felt would be useful for students to know. I believe the vocabulary words I chose
would challenge those in a more advanced level of English class.
C. Why my activities are appropriate for this class:
For my first activity, I felt the dictionary quiz would allow for students to get a better
understanding of difficult words, given the fact that these words are not so commonly used
in everyday speech, therefore this increases the chances that most of, if not all words
would be unfamiliar to the students. So, in doing this quiz, students would be increasing
their vocabulary.
For the second activity which includes the use of the internet, I chose to use a combination
of types of questions: multiple choice, one-word answers, written answers, lists, factual
and personal preference questions. In doing this, I believe that all students would benefit
as there are different types of learners. It is as well designed to test their understanding of
what they are reading while using skimming and scanning techniques to find information
