P4: You must use recent statistical data (from the past five years) to explain how inbound and domestic
tourism is affected by different internal and external factors. You need to cover five different factors and the
data that you use should be presented in a variety of formats e.g. tables, graphs and pie charts.
Introduction: Over the past few years, there has been many different external and internal factors that have
contributed to a decline or rise in tourism to the UK. An internal factor means something occurring within the
UK, such as marketing campaigns about the UK in other countries. An external factor is something that may
occur outside of the UK such as weather or travel restrictions imposed on people.
Factor one: internal or external
Health and Safety - internal
How does it affect inbound tourists:
Health and Safety in the UK may affect inbound tourists in numerous ways depending on where their
country of origin is from. For instance, if they are from Europe they can apply for an EHIC card which
means if they injury themselves or need emergency care whilst in the UK then they do not have to
pay the medical bills. This is very beneficial towards people who would like to travel but are more
prone to needing medical care – ie. If they had a medical condition that can be fatal such as
diabetes. Furthermore, they have a piece of mind when they travel abroad, especially if they can’t
afford medical care. This makes it more likely for them to visit the UK as they will know that if
anything were to unfortunately happen then they can use this card to get it for free. The UK also has
very good standards of health and safety such as having many laws in placed which are enforced –
such as everyone in a car must wear a seatbelt which helps reduce road deaths. There is also a low
crime rate of 23% when involving guns, which would attract tourists with family’s whom want to
know they will be safe while visiting.
How does it affect domestic tourists:
The health and safety in the UK is very beneficial to domestic tourist. For example, if they go out to a
restaurant and get food poisoning then there are agencies that they can inform which will perform a
health and safety check on the food, if the restaurant fails to adhere to the food safety rules then
they will be shut down. This is relevant to many other facilities such as hotels, theme parks and
more. It gives tourists a piece of mind when visiting/travelling which then allows them to focus on
more of the important things such as their actual purpose for visiting. When terrorist attacks
occurred in the UK, the government made sure that all major areas, such as shopping centres, tourist
attractions, airports, etc. were equipped with armed police ready
to take action if such incidents were to occur again. Furthermore,
they also performed emergency drills so they would be ready for
action if there were another attack. This put domestic tourists
mind at ease as they felt secure when traveling and visiting
destinations in the UK.
Supporting data : The chart shows that terrorism cases have risen
slightly in the UK, however, most terror suspects have been
arrested before they carried out their plan. This shows how good the police and other people
involved in preventing terrorism work. There is more people that have been arrested that actually
convicted which some may argue that they may still be a threat, however, it police must still be
monitoring these people.
, Factor Two:
Accessibility - internal
How does it affect inbound tourists:
Accessibility to the UK is vital for inbound tourists visiting the UK. There is a diverse range of people who may
chose to visit the UK for numerous different reasons. Many of these tourists may have some sort of disability
such as being unable to walk or may have a family that has a baby. Therefore they need to feel as if they can
visit an attraction easily and therefore must the facility should have facilities to cater to the people who need
it. This would increase attraction to the UK from inbound tourists as many attractions and
hotels/accommodation accommodate to these needs. It is also very easy to get around the UK too. There are
many train lines such as Virgin, Great Western Rail, and more that run almost 24/7. Furthermore, there is also
the National Express which is a cheap and effective way for tourists to travel around to other destinations in
the UK that they may wish to visit. The National Express is very flexible and goes to many destinations
including, London Victoria, Blackpool, Brighton, as well as airports so inbound tourists will be able to get to
their destination easily and at a low price. Consequently, this increases traction to the UK as it is one of the few
country’s that try to make everything accessible as possible.
How does it affect domestic tourists:
Domestic tourists will most likely travel by car or by bus around the UK. This is good as there is a lot of parking
available throughout many towns in the UK. Furthermore, many cities have a park & ride system that they
operate. This means that domestic tourists can park their vehicle outside of the city and ride into it on the bus.
This saves them money as parking in a city centre can get expensive, it also save them stress of finding a
parking space, it is also good for the environment. Furthermore, if they wish to travel by train, they can
purchase a Rail Card which gives them discounts on traveling by train as traveling by train is quite expensive in
the UK. This appeals to domestic tourists as it makes it easier and cheaper for them to travel around the UK by
train if they are restricted to travel by motor vehicle or choose not too. Many of these modes of transport also
allow for people with restricted access to travel on them too. For example, if the domestic tourists travels by
car but has a passenger that is disabled, then they can park in the disabled spaces available. Many attractions
also have ramps for people in wheelchairs or with pushchairs.
Supporting Data: This chart shows that London, UK is the 3rd most expensive city in the world for transport.
This is not beneficial for inbound/domestic tourists travelling on a budget as this would make it less assessable
for them to use public transport to get around.
