Unit 3 – The Appeal of 3 UK Destinations - Blackpool
M1 - analyse how one UK destination attracts inbound and domestic visitors and meets their needs. Using one of your destinations
from P3 you must analyse how this destination attracts inbound and domestic visitors and meets their needs.
Tourist one:
Type of tourist: Inbound
Motivation: A group of Chinese businessmen attending a business meeting in Blackpool. They are aged 30-45.
Needs:
They would need to be picked up from the airport, however, due to them flying business class, the airline would most likely
have arranged a chauffeur service for them. The hotel that they stay in would need to have a good rating, therefore a 4* or
a 5* hotel would be most suitable. The hotel would also need to have Wi-Fi as they would need to access the internet to do
work on it. Furthermore, it would also be beneficial if the hotel was close to where the meeting is being held as they
wouldn’t need to travel far and potentially get lost to get to the meeting. It would be an added bonus if the hotel had a
restaurant too. Furthermore, they would also need some time of entertainment. It is recommended that they go to a fine
dining restaurant, pub or even a strip club if they wish. The businessmen would also need a place to hold the meeting,
however the company they work for should’ve already planned where this will be. Although, if it is up to them to plan, then
they would need a significantly large space that caters to business meetings and is located in a convenient place. They
would also need translations as there may be a language barrier. They would also need to have a hotel located away from
popular attractions such as the beachfront or nightclubs. This is because the businessmen would need their sleep as they
will be doing business work for the duration of their visit and thus meaning that they will need to look presentable and act
presentable. As they are businessmen, they most likely wouldn’t have to pay for much due to their business paying for it,
therefore they don’t need to worry that much about value for money. Although, if they eat out, then they may want to a
good amount of food and of good quality too depending on how much they pay for it.
How does this destination attract this tourist:
Blackpool attracts this type of tourist as there is an airport located nearby, it is 1.7 miles from the city centre. This makes
travel from far away destinations easier and more convenient for international travellers who do not know how to travel
effectively in England. It would also attract them as there is many venues available to hire so they could hold meetings or
conferences in them at ease. There are also plenty of high class restaurants, with 17 Michelin restaurants to accommodate
their food choices. There are also plenty of bars in case they wish to try some English beer or relax as it would be a good
activity for them to do when they are not doing any work or in meetings. There is plenty of free Wi-Fi available all over the
city in cafes and they even have free city Wi-Fi which is good for business men to stay in contact all the time. There is also
super fast broadband available which is good for business calls made through Wi-Fi which is likely that is what they will have
to use as they will not have any cellular network unless they buy a new sim once in the UK. Blackpool also has built plenty of
conference centres in order to keep tourism coming even out of the typical tourist season.
How does this destination meet the needs of the tourist:
Blackpool meets the needs of the business men as they offer plenty of 4*-5* hotels available on demand which is handy in
case it was a last minute unplanned important trip. There is Wi-Fi almost everywhere which allows for frequent business
call, access to email and to contact their family’s back home. Most restaurants have different menus available in foreign
languages which is suitable for the business men as they may not be able to communicate in English well. There is many
types of transport available such as a train station, taxis, hire car, bike hires, etc. which is good as many of these don’t need
pre-booking in advance. They have also invested into building business parks which is good for them as this offer large
rooms available for rent and hire in order for them to hold meetings or conferences. Blackpool has spent £25 million on
newly built conference and exposition centre. They have also added extensions to the Winter Gardens, in order to increase
the capacity, which now allows 7000 people to be there for conferences available. There are also many dry cleaners
available around Blackpool which is good as they can get their suits dry cleaned before attending meetings.

Tourist Two:
Type of tourist: Inbound
Motivation: A family from Spain with two children aged 5 and 8. They are on holiday due to leisure tourism and want to
experience a classic English seaside resort.
Needs: The family would preferable need a 2 bedroom accommodation, a hotel would most likely be the best option as it would
be cheap and fit their basic needs, such as including things like a shower, parking, and some hotels even include entertainment
packages/ evening shows to keep people entertained. Furthermore, if they choose to travel by car, they would most likely be
able to park close to the accommodation as many hotels have car parking for free or for a small fee. They would also need to find
places to eat which are family friendly as this would save costs and suit their children’s needs as they could decide to play while
their parents eat or the option to order from the children’s menu which would be good as this would suit the children’s needs
when eating out. They would also need to be able to have transport to and from the airport, the closest airport would be
Blackpool International, but they may also chose to travel to Manchester International as it is more recognisable and most likely
cheaper, they can travel from the airport by taxi or may chose to travel by train as it will be cheaper but the children may be a bit
restless. They would also need activities to do which is suitable for family’s of all ages. These activities would need to be things
targeted towards younger children as otherwise they may get bored and therefore irritable which would frustrate the parents
and cause an unrelaxing atmosphere. The family may also choose to hire a baby sitter as they may want to go out at night to
enjoy some time to themselves. Furthermore, they would also need transport to get around Blackpool, therefore it’s suggested
that they use a hire car as this means they can travel at their own pace which may be useful as they could get delayed due to the
children. As they are from Spain, this means that they speak Spanish and therefore their English may not be that fluent.
Therefore if they use a hire car, they would find it easier to navigate around as they can set a sat NAV to Spanish. Furthermore,
they may need access to a tourist information centre if they wish to find some more activities to do.
How does this destination attract this tourist:
Blackpool attracts family tourists due to having a wide range of activity’s that are suitable for the entire family. They also attract
inbound travellers due to having a reputation around the world. Blackpool has a wide range of activity’s and attractions for all
ages and likes. It has a big reputation of being one of the most traditional and best English seaside resorts in England. The
Blackpool pleasure beach is one of the United Kingdoms most visited attractions and therefore often has new rides for all ages
and heights. Therefore, this means that there will be something there for everyone of the family - ie. if the children don’t like
heights, then they can go on a ride that isn't high, such as the dodgems or go-karts. Furthermore, if they choose to go in the
Autumn season, then there is the famous 'Blackpool Illuminations' which is fun for all ages and it is quite known. As Blackpool is
in the North West of England, it means it relies on good weather to attract tourism however due to its location, this means that
the weather is unreliable, so therefore there are plenty of indoor attractions for tourists in case the weather isn't good. This
attracts more tourists as it means that they have a 'back up' plan if the weather isn't good. It has been a popular tourist
destination since the 1800's, therefore has learnt how to cater to family's as they are the most popular types of tourists to
Blackpool.
How does this destination meet the needs of the tourist:
Blackpool meets the needs of inbound family leisure tourists as there is over 400 attractions and activities for family's to do
together. This ranges from the Zoo, to the circus. As they are a family, this means that holidays can get really expensive fast,
especially as they are travelling from Spain, therefore the attractions aim to make the price as cheap as possible for families
which you can see as they often offer family discounts. Furthermore, there are also many cheap hotels which would be suitable
for them such as 'The Pearl Hotel' with prices starting from as low as £24 per night. This meets their needs as they can choose
somewhere suitable to stay for cheap whilst still meeting their individual needs ie. if they need a car park. There are also 24/7
taxi services running through out Blackpool if the family were in need of a taxi. Another form of transport available for them is
the train. Blackpool has 3 train stations in total, with facilities such as a pay phone, cafe, newsagents and more. The trains are
from all over the country such as to Manchester, Liverpool, London and even to Scotland. This is good for the family as they may
wish to venture out of Blackpool and explore other places in England or may travel this way as it is a cheaper alternative to a taxi.
They may also wish to take the National Express if a train is too confusing for them - as they may not understand English that
well.
