Presentation of Self in Everyday Life – Wrap-up
 The audience doesn’t want the performance to be a disaster.
 Agreement is stressed and opposition is underplayed.
 We pick our audiences who we think our performances will be successful to.
 The self emerges through interactions.
 Discrepant roles – a spotter is someone who checks up on the performer and
can find out the secrets of the team. They find out what is really going on with
the team.


Definition of situation
 World of agency where our interactions are often an alienation of our true self
and more a communication of what we are prescribed to.
 Collective agreement between people – how they react to a situation and how
they fit into it.

 Staff at a grocery store
 Audience: their customers


Discrepant role example
Member of staff covertly observing how staff serve the customers. This is an
example of the “spotter” – a person who is checking up on the performance on
behalf of the audience. This person may complicate the performance as they might
find out some secrets from the team.

 Back region: kitchen of a restaurant
 Front region: dining area of a restaurant
